2003 WCC Club World Cup

THE DRAW, Part 2

"Welcome back to the WCC Club World Cup tournament draw! Eight teams have officially entered the Club World Cup, while SIX await their fate."

How does it work?

Round 2 will work a little differently to Round 1, where eight teams were drawn one-by-one, and split across four groups of the Club World Cup.

In this round however, the remaining six teams will enter, where four more teams will be drawn, out of which only two will enter the main tournament.

Round 2

Four teams will be drawn out of the remaining six, and each team will be assigned a corresponding number denoting their respective group. The first team drawn will be assigned number one, which will correspond to Group A. The second team will draw two for Group B, and so on... until each of the four groups have a team designated to them.

Once four teams have been drawn, the last two to remain unpicked throughout the first and second rounds of The Draw will head straight to the qualifying round.

Following which, in Round 3, it will be decided which group gains an additional team, and which of the four teams drawn in Round 2 head to qualifying round.

Shall we commence?

"First team to be drawn in the second round of The Draw, should Group A gain an additional team, is..."

CbZEHzN.png

"...Red Rose! The English Champions, comprising of the deadly duo of Zachary Wilson and Richard Carolyne will be headed to the main draw of the tournament IF Group A is drawn in Round 3."

"Moving on to the second team of the second round, being drawn for Group B..."

983uNGq.png

"Shaanxi! The Chinese Champions may just end up in the same group as Beijing, Club World Cup winners and Labour Trophy runners-up, if the third round spits out Group B."

"Similarly, if Group C is drawn in Round 3 of The Draw, the group could potentially gain..."

s7OTlOU.png

"The Indian One-Day Champions, Kolkata! Led by the Pride of Bengal, Shubman Kotak, the team could definitely do with skipping the qualifying round."

"Another team that would want to skip the qualifying round in the hopes that Round 3 determines Group D for the additional team, is..."

ttYotVa.png

"The Warriors of South Africa! Arguably the strongest side on-paper heading into this tournament. Perhaps for them, going through the qualifying round may just be practice without any real stakes given the sheer depth and quality of their all-Proteas squad."

"With the four sides now drawn for each of the four groups, it will now be decided in the third round which of the two groups gain an additional team, and which of these four teams end up playing in the qualifying round regardless."

"One thing certain however, is the fact that the Champions of Wales and the Champions of Saudi Arabia, Aberystwyth Avengers and Jeddah are headed to the qualifying round of the tournament"

qq2fCTO.png

"Join us for the final round of the Club World Cup Draw, where the President of the World Cricket Conference, Müller Schwanstegger himself, will be drawing TWO numbers from 1-4 to determine which of the four sides drawn in Round 2 make it into the main draw of the tournament, and which two sides join Aberystwyth Avengers and Jeddah into the qualifying round...

...but, after a word from our sponsors."

THE DRAW, Part 3

"Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome you back once again for the final round of the 2003 WCC Club World Cup Draw."

How does it work?

In Round 3, WCC President Müller Schwanstegger will draw two balls from a separate stroller. This time, instead of containing the name of one of the clubs participating in this year's tournament, the ball will contain a number between 1 and 4.

In the previous round, four teams were drawn and assigned a number which corresponded to the group they would end up in if they were picked in this round. So naturally, the two numbers drawn in this round will result in that number's designated team advancing to the main draw of the tournament, into that very group.

Whereas the remaining two teams, unpicked, will enter the qualifying round of the tournament with Aberystwyth Avengers and Jeddah.

Round 3

"For the final round of The Draw, please welcome World Cricket Conference President Müller Schwanstegger."

"But before Mr. Schwanstegger is asked to reach, here is a refresher on who the four clubs drawn in the previous round were..."

"Now Mr. Schwanstegger, please reach inside and draw the ninth team entering this year's Club World Cup, and the group they'll be going to..."

"Shaanxi have entered the Club World Cup! And they will join their fellow countrymen in Beijing, as the two Chinese sides lock horns in Group B."

"And now, to draw for the last time. Mr. Schwanstegger, please reach in, and draw the tenth team entering the main draw of the 2003 WCC Club World Cup."

"It's the Warriors! Making their second Club World Cup appearance, the Warriors are headed straight to Group D to join Middle Region and Karachi."

"That means Red Rose and Kolkata have unfortunately evaded the main draw, and will have to compete in the qualifying round to play in the Club World Cup"

"Thank you for joining us for the 2003 WCC Club World Cup Draw. With the four groups and the qualifying round now set in stone, we can only wait for the exhilarating cricketing action in store for us when the tournament finally commences."

"Join us on August 10th in Vejle, when the Welsh Champions kickoff the qualifying round against the English Champions. Until then... bye!"

Eric Naismith led one of the most extraordinary fightbacks to save Red Rose from 51/5 with an unbeaten 80 from 112 deliveries. His innings helped Red Rose avoid being bowled out, which seemed inevitable given the way they started their innings. Naismith's invaluable knock also gave Red Rose's bowlers something to bowl at.

Unfortunately for the English champions, their fellow countryman William George Charles top-scored as Aberystwyth Avengers ran away with the game regardless.

Aberystwyth Avengers won by 5 wickets (with 62 deliveries remaining)
