BCCI appoints lawyer

Harbhajan Singh faces a minimum 10-match ban from the Indian Premier League if an official hearing, in New Delhi on Monday afternoon, finds him guilty of having hit Sreesanth, his India team-mate.

Harbhajan also faces separate action from the BCCI, which has asked him to explain, "as a contracted player", his role in the incident after the IPL match between the offspinner's Mumbai Indians and Sreesanth's King XI Punjab on Friday. Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said on Monday that Sudhir Nanavati, a lawyer, has been appointed to conduct a "preliminary inquiry" and submit a report "within 15 days" to Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president, who will refer the findings to the board's disciplinary committee for possible action.

MS Dhoni said:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's captain in the shorter versions of the game, hopes the authorities will check the sequence of events rather than go by what television footage in the Harbhajan Singh-Sreesanth controversy.

Comparing the row to the one between footballers Zinedine Zidane and Marco Matterazi at the last World Cup final, Dhoni felt that the act of provocation needed to be checked too.

I'll allow the new thread with a clean slate, but be warned that I will not tolerate uncivil behaviour. Discuss the incident and the ban but get over the crying bit and don't argue over his 'sissyness'.

Ya Hope for best Dean that this thread even move to more two pages.
Though just after posting this news I have seen on good reputed Indian News channel that BCCI has decided that they won't take it easily and they have allotted personal punishment for Bhajji besides 10 match ban.

To be honest I think that 10 weeks is incredibly excessive for a slap. In the AFL we just saw a player suspended for 7 weeks for knocking out an opponent with a punch. A slap would probably get 1 week if that much.

What is Dhoni upto ? He state Zidane and Materrazi incident, that was ZIdanes last match so Obviously he cant be banned and in football body contatcs get placed but in cricket its not . anyway i just heard Bhajji has been banned for 11 matches .

I agree but it because of reputation that the game of cricket has.
Violence doesn't have place in cricket.
And after all this all happened to Indian player in India and you know India Media.
They always are waiting for this conspiracy. :D

The worst part about Harbhajan's misbehaviour is not the slap itself - even though it was a serious offence, but the way he's now made the whole of the BCCI, the media and Indian fans look like idiots for standing up for him in the racism row. How ungrateful of him that he cannot control his behaviour properly after almost 10 years in International cricket and after the BCCI has stood behind him in his time of trouble... he should have known better and kept his temper in check.

Now this arrogant brat thinks he can get away with anything.

When the BCCI probes the issue, I would strongly support a 1-year ban for this spoilt brat of Indian cricket at the very least. The punishment is too lenient for a senior player who should have been a role model for young cricketers.

(Clarification: as I understand it, the current 11-match ban is by the IPL committee and has nothing to do with the BCCI which will hold a separate inquiry and hearing)

Sreesanth, in a later interview, said it was more of a 'punch'.

The literal translation from hindi to english - 'thappad' - meaning basically to hit - translates to slap.

Just to let you guys know. I don't really know of the source, I think I read it on royalchallengers.com

:laugh HAHA Great news. That arrogant ignoramus had it coming to him

Don't worry, the BCCI might also ban him internationally. The current ban is by the IPL committee only.

What I really feel upset is that

1. Harbhajan knew his behaviour was under the scanner after the Australian tour.

2. The BCCI, the Indian media and the public backed him to the hilt in Australia over the Sydney row.

3. Now inevitably and quite rightly in my opinion, Australian fans and the media will feel justified about their complaint over Harbhajan. And in my view, after what has happened now, how can we Indians ever stand up for him again?

Who can say now that Harbhajan was not really guilty of using racist language with certainty? His ill-tempered nature has now clearly come out in full view of the public. It's most unfortunate for Indian Cricket in general.
