To put it briefly; No.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a prime example of just how sensational a video game can be. The problem with some games is that they try to hard to beat other games rather than focusing on just being a good game. Like Saints Row for example; it's a decent game but it makes no bones about the fact that it's a 'GTA Beater' when it is miles behind the game. If it's developers tried to build on the good features of the game rather than just try to rival GTA then the game would be a lot better.

But is gaming going downhill? No, it's better than ever.

You seem to hate games every now and again Rob, what's with it?

Trust me, Fallout 3 will add a whole new meaning to the term 'replayability'.

You really, really should. I've just started Fallout 2 again about 10 minutes ago. I assume that you'll no doubt be playing it on a high end computer? If so you may encounter a few resolution issues but don't worry, i've got the files to sort that out and I can easily direct you towards them. :)

If Fallout 3 is anything like it's predecessors then i'll be playing that for 10 years as well.

Yeah, you just have to download a tiny program to be able to play in windowed mode. Works like a charm though.

Just give me a shout if you decide to play it or if your having trouble legally obtaining it.

Madman, did you try Sega Mega or Atari when you’s was young, it was amazing dude. Games these days are shocking. I’m not a super duper gamer, also I hate these guns, shooter, gta, metal gear, Japanese fighting, stuff. I like things like space invaders, or some tennis or fifa.

No, gaming has improved leaps and bounds,
If u compare FPS games u can compare Half-Life to a new game like Crysis.
Half-Life was just monotonus shotting and killing wheras Crysis has strategy, and much advanced gameplay.

RTS well u can easily see massive improvemant here.
Comparing Age Of Empires and Stronghold 2 ,
Age of Empires- Gather resources(5) get a larger army than enemy and win.
Stonghold-Gather resorces, keep citizens well fed, keep them happy, use sige weapons selectively etc.

Also there is the birth of action third-person sword games like Prince of persia where exteme eye-hand co-ordination has developed.

Gaming has gone up massively

Personally, for me, it seems that way.

Most games released today are:
A) Rehashes of last-gen games, with additions, stuff taken away and/or a different storyline/map. (GTA IV, PES 08, Resident Evil 5 etc.)
B) Same old shooters, just with different controls/guns/maps/storylines etc. (No point using examples, there's too many of them)
C) Games which just fail because too much emphasis is put on graphics instead of the important stuff like gameplay (FIFA 08, GRID, Gran Turismo 5).

And even then the good games are ruined by badly programmed single player AI and/or all the twats online. Most people online exploit the flaws in a game, play one-dimensional tactics or lag cheat just to win, it's as if they think they must win at all costs as if their life depended on it... Even in "unranked" matches.
The numbers of those twats has increased rapidly:
PES4 online - 90% of games were fair, with both players trying to play a fairly realistic game of football, 10% either quit on you or tried to score cutbacks. The high amount of fair games may have been down to the lack of a ranking system.
PES5 online - About 60% of matches were fair, with no cheating or quitting, however there were more twats than before.
PES6 online - About 90% of matches are cheat-fests, where the only form of attack is cutbacking and people discover and use all sorts of lag/superteam cheats to win their matches, with people also abusing each other on the text chat all the time.

Then there's the "replayability" factor in the games, which seems to be lacking in the new games. Perfect example being FIFA 08 - A game that seems fantastic, the best football simulation around, until you see that most of the goals are coming in the same way and that there are so many glitches to exploit. Even PES 08, something which is just a tweaked version of a game which I loved in PES5, has gone badly downhill and now is just a buggy mess of a game.

I have been playing PES5 again recently, and I was surprised at just how well it has aged, it's gameplay is still better than any of the football games released since, the goals all look different, the tackling/dribbling is responsive, the shooting is still the best in any game I think etc. Even after nearly 3 years of having the game, I can still see new things in it, no new games have that quality.

I think that too much effort is spent on making graphics in games good and not enough time put into making epic storylines, great gameplay improvements or innovative game modes.

Anyone agree?

As far as value for money is concerned, yes. Far too often, you can spend £30-£40 on a game and finish it in a couple of days and most of the time, there's no replay value, either. I know they have multiplayer, but these days, the devs are using that as an excuse to skimp on the singleplayer content. Some of us prefer a good, lengthy singleplayer experience with a great storyline.

I remember when you payed around £10-£15 for a game and you got great value for money!

MasterBlaster76 added 6 Minutes and 59 Seconds later...

It's just that I feel, well, almost robbed by game developers because what we get offered is so much below what is possible.
GTA IV is almost a tease, it's like "Look at this, you can have a big detailed city to roam around in with a great story and online play" but the story is so short and the online modes are so bland that after the story, all you can do is try various ways of dying in a funny way, play around with the physics, do stunt jumps, shoot pigeons etc.
So much more could be done with almost every game, particularly on PS3 with the blu-ray discs, yet it seems they get rushed out for a quick release to make money rather than being made carefully for a few years to make sure they are as good as they can be...

Also, needing a license to put anything in a game screws them up too - Top Spin 3 being a prime example, how much better would that game be with all of the world's top 20? How much better would PES/FIFA be with the stadia of all the Premiership teams?I certainly hope so, it's the only game on my "must buy" list, I have said a couple of times that I would play Fallout 1 and 2 and have never got round to it, I will make a point of doing that some time next week! :)

According to this months' PC Gamer, Fallout 3 will have 10,000 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) different endings... Now, that's what I call replay value...
