Trescothick Admits Ball Tampering

All international and county sides do it. It's common practise these days, I thought everyone knew it went on. It's been fairly open.

yeah, Pakistan team were also chewing the extra gum, as they never had time to brush their teeth. ;D got you there, ah!

I've heard stories of this happening for ages. Ronnie Irani was talking about it happening years ago for England. He was even saying that players should be allowed to put what they want on either side of the ball, as long as they don't touch the seam or scratch into the ball. England weren't even rubbing the sweets into the ball, just using the sweeter saliva used by eating the sweets to shine the ball. Nothing illegal bout that in my eyes, if you're allowed to use sweat I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to use Murray Mint infected saliva :p

Moving swiftly on from theese arguments, Did you know Trescothick admited ball tampering?

I'm fairly certain that rubbing any foreign substances on the ball is illegal, so using mints falls under this category. Obviously 2005 is a long time ago and Trescothick knows that, but I still would like to see someone acknowledge it from the English camp. I'm not asking for a reversal (I don't expect it nor do I want it) of the result of the series, but it's fair to say that if this is what caused the reverse swing phenomenon that bamboozled Australia then this win is just a bit tainted. ;)

the poms did a lot of blatent bending of the rules in that series which was only dismissed cause apparently the aussies aren't allowed to complain about bad sportsmanship...as shown once again when we played that pathetic indian team recently...but who cares, their true ability was shown in 2006.

love to see that pretty boy simon jones now....he looked so guilty when giving bracks (expletive removed)....what happened to his aspirations to become the world's numbe one bowler?? at least flintoff still has a crack even though he's ben shown to not be the worlds best allrounders shoe lace. maybe he should just stick to unerwear advertisments.

Injuries unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure that this goes on with most teams around the world. And I'd be pretty sure that at some point the Australians have used it, so people getting on their high horse, please don't.

Rubbing a mint on a ball would land you in a whole heap of trouble, sucking a mint then using your spit to shine the ball is a different kettle of fish. Its pretty common practice to see players sucking mints or similar sweets during play. What do you think they are doing it for? So they are minty fresh when they make appeals? I saw the Lancashire players handing out the mints at a recent County Championship match (not that it did them any good).

I have to say I had no idea about this phenomenon so I guess it is not as commonplace as it sounds. Perhaps I wasn't following the 2005 Ashes as closely (I don't watch County Cricket, so I don't know where they go with that).

Two points I have from the article that np10 linked:

- English players obviously felt a little guilty about using that technique/didn't know that Tresco was doing it, because Jones was not ready to admit it
- Waqar's admitting that they used similar tactics to induce reverse swing shows how biased the world is when it comes to accusing players of ball-tampering

Wow, another idiot has joined the forums....

What other examples of "blatent cheating" occurred in the 2005 Ashes series then ?

lets not beat a dead horse...but bowlers taking pee breaks (aka a good old sleep and massage cause they all keep breaking down...and why not substitute a specialist fielder on while you are at it?) before and after every spell was hardly playing within the spirit of the games.

anyways...still didnt win a test against us when we were at full strength and got found out when your chief ball tamerper sooked home to mum....so let 2005 be forever tarnished!! i know the aussie press has totally written it off already and rightly so!

and good point...if jones and the others thought it did nothing why did they not admit to it when the point came up back then? guilty as charged....looks a right cheating sod now!
