Just heard on 3 News that someone threw out the idea about spin idol in Australia. Up and coming spinners would go infront of spin legends who would judge them American idol style.

Edit: Found an article on it.
THE prospect of an Australian Idol-type series designed to unearth Australia's new spin stars has been raised in a strategy meeting which will shape our slow-bowling future.

The meeting, in Brisbane featuring most of nation's top spin-bowling voices including Shane Warne, Stuart MacGill, Ashley Mallett, Terry Jenner and head COE coach Greg Chappell, heard a left-field suggestion for the possibility of an Australian Idol-type series where young spin hopefuls could audition before the cameras and be assessed by former slow-bowling stars.

"It was made along with a lot of other suggestions at the meeting and is not central to our strategy,'' said Centre of Excellence chief executive Belinda Clark who is preparing a paper on the future of Australian spin bowling.

Though Clark did not include the Idol idea in her recommendations leading media buyer Ian Warner from Universal McCann feels such a project would be a winner.

"I reckon it would work,'' Warner said. "Cricket is very popular and this time of year a lot of people would watch it. There is a precedent because soccer has done something like it and it has gone well.

"Channel Nine would be the best chance of the free-to-air stations but I reckon it would be a big chance of being picked up by pay television. It would have to be commercially viable but I reckon you would be a good chance of picking up a big sponsor.''

But Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young last night was fearful the suggestion would create the wrong impression about Australia's spin-bowling plans.

"It was raised but it is not part of our strategy,'' said Young, who claimed CA had full confidence in its development programs. "I don't want to create the impression we are using reality television to identify the next Shane Warne.''

Wouldn't be a bad idea to get some kids in front of some people that know a thing or two about spin bowling. Would give teams a chance to see if there are any young spinners with talent.

dont tell me by "legends" they mean, one drunk idiot, one that has nothing to do with spin, and another foreign cocky arrogant SOB who never touched a cricket ball before?

As always 2 guys and 1 chick. Hope it's Lara Bingle :D

some 1 posted something about Clarke's break up with some chick...is that the same one? ^^

Clarke bowls spin. if she is there, then he should go try out and win her back with a new spin

It's a pretty good idea, and it'd be interesting to see how the competition would be run.

Enough with the bad jokes :D

Shows how desperate we are :p But you never know, we could uncover a gem! Hope it's on FTA

That's the only real weakness in Australian cricket.
You are yet to uncover a good/class spinner since Warne.
Your number one spinner has a FC average of 45...

Still a Test average of 32 is the important thing. He's been improving. Perth would probably be the time he uses the doosra, we'll see how he goes.

He's got a test average of 32, which is less than three worse than your number one spinner, who is also your best player :p

Gazza_11 added 3 Minutes and 17 Seconds later...

BTW, Hauritz has a better strike rate than Vettori

Where do I sign up? :p

I actually bowl leg spin for my club. I've taken 8 wickets so far at an average of 10. :)

Some of you may have seen my video a couple of years ago bowling in the nets. I can turn it a bit and can also bowl the wrong un.

Hahaha good one.

I'm normally a swing bowler, but trying to go spiin for the sake of prioritising my batting but still offering a bowling options.

Big hands mean I get big spin, and I've got the variations but my lengths are just too inconsistent.

I can bowl an off-break and a leg-break. Probably can spin it more than Hauritz :p

But I am also mainly a swing bowler, but if I really get pissed off, I can start doing a-la-Tait and barrage them :laugh
