Multan Sultans beat Peshawar Zalmi in the tournament opener
The Pakistan Super League commenced at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium with an opening ceremony which was followed by the opening match of the tournament between the newly formed Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi.
Multan Sultans elected to bat first after having won the coin toss. This decision was proven right, as they piled-up a 174-run total in the end. Ahmed Shehzad and Kumar Sangakkara opened the innings, and started off very aggressively. Even though they were back in the dugout very early, especially Kumar Sangakkara, their quick starts gave Multan Sultans' the base to accelerate and build a grand total on.
Shoaib Malik and Umar Siddiq were the top-scorers for Multan Sultans, they added 55 and 44, respectively. Kieron Pollard played a nice finishing cameo of 20 runs from 9 balls. Peshawar Zalmi could not contain Multan Sultans despite Hasan Ali's 3-fer. Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo picked 2 wickets apiece, but the latter was very expensive alongside other bowlers who didn't pick a wicket.
In response, Peshawar Zalmi's top-order was blown away, especially their top-two who fell victim to Junaid Khan. And as a result, the team could never get back into the game despite a solid middle-order partnership that showed resistance by Haris Sohail and Khushdil Shah. The lower-order was looking to score runs at a faster pace, and in doing so, they ended up giving their wickets away to the twenty20 death-bowling specialist, Kieron Pollard. His death-bowling finished what Junaid Khan's new-ball spell started.
The Shahid Afridi Experiment
The defending champions, Quetta Gladiators went up against Karachi Kings in match two of the Pakistan Super League. Just like the first match, this was also played at the cracked pitch of Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
Karachi Kings won the toss and elected to bat first. They decided to play Shahid Afridi as an opener, and boy did it pay off. The decision to play Shahid Afridi as an opener did wonders for Karachi Kings. His aggressive start bundled with a quick, classy Colin Ingram cameo laid the perfect foundation for a big score.
And even after Shahid Afridi was clean bowled by Shane Watson, it did not put the breaks on their innings as they had the talent to back that start up, and so they did. Babar Azam and Lendl Simmons carried the team perfectly during the middle-overs, which was then capped off with a fine cameo from Hasan Mohsin, leading them to 195/6 at the end of the innings.
In response to that total, Quetta Gladiators' top-order disappointed heavily, especially Kevin Pietersen, who scored only a duck. Considering the target they were chasing, they lost their top-order very cheaply, and from that point onwards, it was fait accompli. Shahid Afridi was the most valuable player for Karachi Kings in this match. Not only did he provide the base for their team while batting, he also bagged three wickets under his name, making himself the player of the match.
