Lucknow Super Giants' deep tail prevails as they steal a 1-wicket victory in the penultimate over against Kolkata Knight Riders at Salt Lake Stadium.
Another day, another Ross Taylor knock to save face for Kolkata Knight Riders. Even on a grassy wicket and an early wicket falling, Kolkata were off to a flyer with Quinton de Kock and Virat Kohli taking Lucknow Super Giants' bowlers head on with their aggressive counterattack. But eventual breakthroughs ultimately curbed their progress, followed by a crumbling middle-order being left entirely on Ross Taylor's shoulders to save. Ross Taylor was resourceful once more, pulling out all the artillery in his arsenal to drag Kolkata towards some semblance of a formidable total. Josh Hazlewood's cameo at No. 11 pushed Kolkata to 237 for 9 with Ross Taylor remaining unbeaten on 76 from 129 deliveries. Kolkata's middle-order, particularly the desi contingent within, has misfired for pretty much the entire season. Whenever Rishi Dhawan falters, they fail and fall flat on their face. Today was no different, apart from the reason of Kolkata's middle-order collapse being a steaming Mitchell Starc. A middle-overs spell that gives Jofra Archer's spell from the other day a run for its money. After getting rid of Rishi Dhawan, Mitchell Starc skittled Manan Vohra, Punit Bisht and Andre Russell in the space of 15 deliveries. His bowling performance was followed by David Willey's, who claimed a 3-for himself, albeit at an unconventionally high economy rate.
Lucknow Super Giants were up against two of One-Day cricket's best frontline pacers in Mohammed Shami and Josh Hazlewood, as is evident by KL Rahul's first-over dismissal by the former. Shan Masood gave respect to the bowling that was on offer by playing a subdued knock, whereas Mayank Agarwal was a lot freer with his stroke play. As a result, Shan Masood was able to prolong his innings for much longer while Mayank Agarwal perished after a near run-a-ball 44. Shan Masood and Lucknow captain, Suryakumar Yadav combined to add a vital 54-run partnership for the 3rd-wicket which kept things moving along for Lucknow. Rishi Dhawan dismissed Shan Masood to break the partnership, just as he did previously by dismissing Mayank Agarwal. A breakthrough that was capitalized on brilliantly by Rishi Dhawan, Josh Hazlewood and Mohammed Shami who derailed Lucknow by getting rid of their fragile lower-order very cheaply, bringing Kolkata back into the game. Suryakumar Yadav's valorous innings was brought to an end by Josh Hazlewood, just 4 runs short of a hard-fought fifty. With Lucknow 8 down for 187, the last 51 runs required to win seemed like a mountain to climb, but an extravagant cameo by Axar Patel alongside Siddharth Kaul not losing his wicket saw them home with 1 wicket and 7 deliveries to spare. Having batting that runs deep saved Lucknow from a probable loss, even after having Kolkata reduced to 237.
