The AFCONAfrica Cup of Nations, simply known as the Africa Cup of Nations is the top-tier African cricket championship played in the 50-over format.
The 2001 AFCON Africa Cup of Nations will be the inaugural season of the tournament. It will be played in Zimbabwe from March 4 to 11.
In 2001, the African Confederation of Nations confirmed the participation of all four Full Member AFCON nations for the inaugural edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
At the start of the tournament, South Africa were the best-ranked African team according to the WCC ODI Team Rankings, being ranked 18th in the the world.
Hosts Zimbabwe were ranked 22nd while newly admitted WCC members Morocco and the languishing Egyptians were ranked 26th and 27th respectively.
