Basnahira Cricket Dundee needed a statement, and Joe Root delivered — finally. After a string of quiet outings, the English veteran roared back to form with a masterclass 138 off 139 balls, anchoring the innings and reminding everyone why he’s still one of the best around.
The start wasn’t ideal. Avishka and Perera were gone in a flash, and the middle-order trio of Iyer, Kamindu, and Shanaka never settled. But Root held the fort, calm as ever, waiting out the early movement and then grinding the bowlers down with classic strokeplay.
The turning point came when Ramesh Mendis joined him. With the scoreboard reading a shaky 146/5, the pair stitched 76 brisk runs that flipped the mood entirely. Mendis was brilliant in the death overs, finishing unbeaten on 80 off 62, launching three sixes and eight boundaries in the final surge. The 46-run ninth-wicket stand with Bumrah proved to be a real bonus, lifting Basnahira to 291/8 on a hard pitch that rewards strokeplay.
For Ratnapura, the pressure is squarely on the batters now — and their bowlers will hope the batters can match what Root and Mendis just pulled off.
