Get in there! Summer's back round and that means only one thing, the start of the new cricket season. Myself and my mates had all been looking forward to getting back out there and showing some county scouts what we were made of. Unfortunately, only 2 of my team had made it through to the trials last year and neither were called back for a second trial. I thought I'd get my arse in gear and get down the nets as early as possible to brush up on my batting a bit. I caught the bus and got off in town leaving about a 10 minute walk to get to the nets. I arrived there at around 9:50 and made my way through the car-park and was amazed at how many cars were parked there. More than I'd ever seen it and I'd been going to this very same net area for almost 6 years now. I went inside and found my locker were I keep my kit and things when my mate Ashley came in and told me some news that shocked me. He said that a scout from Lancashire Lightening was here looking for some fresh, young talent for the start of the new season. Then it hit me, that's why so many people had showed up. Never had a scout of this calibre come to Grantham to look for cricketing talent! So we both padded up together and went through to actual nets and saw young kids from 13 year olds right up to my level, the under 21s. I joined up with my team-mates and I was immediatley sent in to bat. I was my using a Puma Atomic 3000, a lovely bat with a nice pick-up and play feel to it. I walked to the other end of the wicket and took guard and waited for the first ball to be sent my way...
After what I thought was a pretty solid net on my behalf, I went to the vending machines to get a drink. Lucozade orange, can't beat it. I went back to get changed into my normal clothes when a guy came in and asked for a word. His name was Barry Evans and he was clearly Welsh. He sat me down and told me that I had great potential to be involved in Lancashire's team for the upcoming season. He also said that Lancashire had tried to get to come and watch me last season but they couldn't find time to come and watch a game. He told me to meet him at Old Trafford next Sunday to meet up with the lads and to show me around the place. I shook his hand and he left, leaving me to get changed. I still couldn't quite believe what had happened. I thought it must have been a dream. I kept thinking I'll wake up on a park bench with a glass of Jack Daniels and a really bad hangover. It didn't happen though, it looks as though I'm playing for Lancashire this season then.
Cor blimey, I need to lie down...
