hmmmm, didnt know exactly in which category this thread would fit but due to the fact that its only a more or less funny idea (maybe) i decided to put it in here.
@the mods
feel free to move this thread into the more fitting category if needed.

well, what is this thread all about.
i use to watch all different kinds of documentarys on youtube dealing with all different kinds of topics.
for a couple of years now im interested in cricket, which is quite unusual for a born german, i use to follow alot of the matches on the inet and so on. i even tried to establish my own cricket club, but we had to quit cause it seemed after more than a year more or less impossible to motivate people to come out and play. we had all the needed equipment but no matter what we tried, we were not able to create something which comes close to a pitch to play on. evertyhing we tried turned out into a randomly ball movement which made it impossible to judge a ball and we never reached the level of a traning experience. just did some knocking around. in germany there are only a few clubs around and not all of them are interested in people who are completely new to the game. we had some tennisball matches with some tamil guys which were fun BUT i am looking for the real cricket experience.
this led me to the following idea (to pic up the point i mentioned about the documentarys).
do you think television broadcasters (bbc, ten sports/star cricket etc.) would be interested in a format of sending a german (me) all over the world to learn cricket from all different kind of people. of course everthing filmed by cameras with me doing a video diary and so on. it should include not only cricket but at the same time it could be a documentary of all the different cultures and mentalities in these countries and their people. i?m not thinking of meeting professional players or something, just the common cricket club player, hobby player (maybe planetcricket members) and hang out with them, having a laugh and of course learn how to play cricket.
has there been a format like that before? i remember an episode of "an aussie goes barmy" which is the sort of style it could be.
although this thread is just for fun, i really thought about something like that during the last couple of weeks cause the more cricket i watch, the more i really really really want to learn how to play.
a big issue of course is my job as a soldier but 6 weeks of leave or something would probably give me the time.

so guys, now its your turn, what do you think of that idea????? in a way realistic????

PS: my english ist not perfect but i hope you get my point

btw: thats me, 28 years old (too old to learn cricket?!)

Can't help you are in Germany :(

thats the idea behind it, in the case that this kind of format works out, im coming where ever you live ;-)
and you teach me how to play for a couple of days, introduce your culture (what ever it might be) and your philosophie of cricket

----------

to combine it with a promo tour for the upcoming new cricket game releases would be another possible way....

More than you being German, the problem is you being a soldier. Not too old you are to learn cricket unless you are to take it as a career option.

*lol* thx for the reply. no no, its not supposed to be an career option, its just about learing the basics
and of course to see the world, meet new people and so on :-)

Think it is a good idea, I myself only really started to play and learn cricket 3-4 years ago, from not playing since school some 14 years before

So you are never to old to learn,

Your job is a big stumbling block, but I'm sure with some decent planning you may be able make something of your idea

interesting, how old are you now? on what level to you play? club member or just hobby player?

so you thnk out there are people who would be interested in watching it?
wasnt there a guy who travelled many countries to the ashes with his bicycle and his camera and later on uploaded his video diary on youtube?!

PS:
no one answered so far if you believe the documentary might be a realistic idea, sponsored by tv broadcasters.

I'm 30 now, haven't actually played for about a year now, only played for fun with a local club,

Got back into soccer last year which put cricket on the back foot, but may start up again next year

Not to sure on the other stuff your asking, but wish you luck with it.

I would try and email Sky Sports or BBC about it and see if they can direct you to someone. I know that on Cricket AM on Sky Sports they ran a special on a Sunday League team in England that was absolutely mediocre but got to travel the world and play against Division 2/3/4 sides like Argentina and Chile in their home countries. They got beaten really badly in each match but they did get on television and it looked like they had fun.

Also, Cricket AM runs a few small sections in their show every now and then on a cricket team in Ibiza.

You'd probably struggle to get Tv support from anywhere but in Germany as even in England the desire for cricket on TV is fairly low :(

However, all you can do is email as many production companies as possible and see what happens. These days, most people are adverse to taking a risk, so you'd almost certainly have to fund most of it yourself. Do the whole thing yourself, and then put most of it together before sending off a pretty much completed version of what exactly you are trying to achieve.

The real truth about most publishers is that they have no imagination, and will only fund something they can see has a definite potential to make money.

I think you'd have to do a lot of work on this, it's an ok idea, but I think it will need something a little more than just a "guy who doesn't know about cricket learns about cricket." for one, to draw an audience the channel would probably prefer to use a celebrity and their are plenty of british people that could do it anyway given that cricket really isn't that phenomenally popular over the whole UK.

I think puddleduck has the right idea, that perhaps it would be better for german audiences by way of an introduction being that you, as a german, would be someone they could relate to.

the other thing you could do is investigate race, class and religion issues of different teams in cricket beyond the field and cast yourself as an outsider looking in. for example, juxtaposing the fairly upperclass standing cricket has in england with the street cricket played in asia by kids with sticks, or the part it played in apartheid in south africa, the rivalry between england and australia, the fact it's probably the only real field a muslim can become a world wide star where his faith is an irrelevance. could any of these issues find parallels in germany? that would give it a journalistic edge, it may also be something you, as a soldier, presumably involved in someway in conflict in the middle east and being well travelled may be able to provide an interesting take on.

but yeah, all you can do is write and see.

the other option you could do is see if JP Duminy wants to swap lives with you as I don't think anyone would notice.

hahahaha, that one made laugh out loud haha :-) good one!

well, of course beside my job, the money would be another big factor but i?m sure your points are right.
the only thing that makes me wonder are all the really really bad shows on tv which are shown.
shocking to hear that even in england cricket isn?t that succesfull anymore when it comes to the viewers.....i didnt know that....

The media is what it is. Which is to say it uses football to fill almost all of it's headlines, and when there aren't any, it just makes them up.
