Some time ago, when my wife joined to play JR's Mafia Game, she copped some serious abuse through some of her other social media accounts for joining and being an active member of PC. Wifey has a thick skin, the line was crossed, however, when he 'mentioned' our kids in some very vitriolic and down right scary stuff which I wont repeat here. Well, I took steps to establish whether this person was a genuine threat to my family and then decided to destroy his life. I go into it a bit here, but there are lessons to be learn't and probably some of the regulars would like to know what happened aswell. I have been deliberately vague on specifics because it may not be over yet.
I will not say who the PC member is, however they don't post here anymore and I will say its someone MrsPacman and myself did not interact with at all. They seemed to take offense for no reason other than MrsPacman was overtly female. I think the extent of our interaction was a post in the same thread in cricket tours. Rest assured its not one of the regular members.
1. You are not private:
Now - this guy made the mistake of using his social media accounts, which, quite frankly would have to rate up there as one of the most stupid things I've ever seen, it meant I had a head start. But realise that with any half reasonable presence on the internet it is a reasonable chance you can be tracked down by private citizens, let alone Law Enforcement. In this case my wife is an example of this as is the perpetrator, as was I in the ContUmp->FP persona. A forum username doesn't protect you, a VPN doesn't protect you. If you have deliberately created a whole different persona from day dot and keep the real you and the fake you separate you MIGHT be able to protect yourself from private citizens at least, but I doubt it.
2. People are more than happy to help you out:
I'm in Australia - I didn't travel to the country proper to do this. Although I did travel to Canberra to meet with Embassy officials and there is a significant amount of justice that can be handed out and acted upon separately to the judicial system, especially if you have the Embassy on board and lock up a pretty solid case yourself.
3. There are real consequences:
Ive well and truly stuffed up the guys life as much as I can. In no particular order and without too much effort he has been expelled and blacklisted from Uni and will struggle to be accepted elsewhere, he was living on campus so lost his accommodation aswell. His family are not happy about it at all (although, I don't want to assume that relationship), he now has travel restrictions pending a court case, with the courts backed up a bit this could take a while. Its a little up in the air whether they will proceed and/or if we will need to testify live or by video link. In addition, his home towns womens group and separately business group was all too pleased to be made aware of the character of the person.
Unfortunately there isn't a sex offenders registry in the country concerned. I mention that because this is the level of offense were talking here, and I know reading the above does trigger a bit of a 'Isn't that a bit much?'.
4. This site partially sanctions these things:
This will be the controversial one. - In some small way, PC kinda sanctions these things. There is a vocal minority of people here that either hold, or inadvertently sanction, patriarchal views. (To put it diplomatically) Importantly there is a pack mentality of defending the 'in' person against anything. Not only that, the Modus Operandi is the same, it is to try to claim it was a joke, and if that does not work to accuse the person of being over the top hormonal or emotional because the desire is to placate the feelings of the 'in' person, who is usually the perpetrator not to consider the views of the person calling out the action. I'm pretty comfortable saying 95% of the time its inadvertent, but its there.

Now, Im a 30yo straight white male with a wife, two kids and a mortgage. I am pretty much the definition of the societally privileged, certainly where I am. Would I have been able to influence overseas institutions like that and sit down with one of the highest ranking diplomats if I wasn't? Probably not. But I know where I sit and try to effect change where I can in my own small way. Cricket is a game that has always been about privilege, either people that have it, or people that wan't it. Its the broadest generalization ill make, but if you are here, you hold a position of privilege in some way, maybe not in every way, but if nothing else because 90% of us have a Y chromasome. So please, if someone from a minority tells you something is off, then its a pretty good chance it is. So, not that I reckon I have much standing, but I propose new rule.

If someone tells you that something you have done has made them uncomfortable or is wrong, give consideration to their point of view and try to understand where they are coming from and try to resolve their concerns amicably.
