There are quite a few who have had the reigns but didn?t perform at their best with bat or ball when they had the job, a good captain should be able to do both, and do them consistently. India have a different captain for the Test and ODI games, although Dhoni should be taking over in both forms of the game in the not too distant future.

Vaughan is a great captain but unfortunately his form recently has been lacking which is unfortunate, because he is more than capable of performing and captaining, having done this many times in the past.

I would have to say probably Jaywardene but I would say Vettori is up there aswel.

Graeme Smith. He wouldn't be everyone's ideal choice, but he leads from the front, he's very hands on and he just demands respect.

The use of the present tense for Vaughan indicates that you are not aware of his abidaction, with Pietersen taking over the mantle.

On topic though i think Chris Gayle has gone someway to revitalising Windies cricket with his somewhat hand-off style. However for lead by example captianing i would look no further than Graeme Smith, its easy to forget he is only in his mid twenties

He is inspirational. But I would say I've never been impressed by captaincy issues like field placements, bowler usage by Smith.

Graeme Smith leads from the front with the bat, but his captaincy on the field is sometimes a little worrying.

He is very lucky to have the pace attack he has, or he would be losing a few of those tight games (such as that 3rd test - with a normal pace attack, and his captaincy, England probably would have another 100 runs or so, and it would have been hard to win from there)

I’d say the best three would be Ponting, Smith and Jayawardene. All great captains and they often perform. If I had to pick one it would be Smith, he is still reasonably young and he is only going to improve as a captain. Taking over at the age of 22 is paying off for both South Africa and Smith.

Smith is probably the best in terms of being a leader, but I rate Jayawardene as probably the most tactically aware.

There aren't that many great captains around at the moment though.

1. Jayawardene
2. Smith and Vettori

Mahela is so good with his field placements and the use of his bowlers. He is far ahead of anyone in cricket today when it comes to those 2 things.
Dhoni could be a good captain but he only leads the ODI side while most of the other captains lead both tests and ODIs.

I also don't rate Ponting that much as a captain.

I think the only thing that keeps Ponting down for me is that he captains the best team in the world with the best players at his usage. How would he be captaining if he didn't have these people. So I can't really say Ricky Ponting is the best captain around.
