Well, it's only 2 weeks away (and still no sponsor announced for the one dayers) so here's the thread for the hype and talk. Who will win the competitions? South Australia look to be a favourite with their contingent of non-regular international players, but that could also mean unexpected call ups. The Vics and Tassie had unexpected success last year, will they continue to improve? Are the current giants, The Bulls, finally going to slide? NSW poached spin talents Beau Casson and Nathan Hauritz, they might become impossible to beat at home. Perhaps we will see a smokey from the West.

Schedules
Pura Cup
Australian One-Day Domestic Cup
Australian Twenty20 Competition

And for the first time, Fox Sports have the rights to all the competitions!

So, what do you think? Is <insert team> going to win? :p

I reckon NSW might snatch it, i reckon itll be quite close in the 4 day game, but the OD'ers some team will stand out such as SA, overall it looks to be a great season, plus the ashes are in the middle of it ;)

oh go west aus, we lost casson and goodwin.. not good, hopefully Ervine actually plays a game

Ervine has taken a while to establish himself, but he's still only 24.

Personally I reckon South Australia are unbelievable on paper. Led by Darren Lehmann, they have former Australian openers Matthew Elliott and Greg Blewett and the seemingly discarded Jason Gillespie, not to mention recent international debutants Cosgrove, Tait and Cullen. It's a great mix of experience and youth that they have, it didn't really come together last year, but they still made the ING final. It might be presumptuous, but I think they have even more young talents ready to fire this year.

I'm hoping Mash continues to improve his batting and produces a few big scores this season, looks like a great talent. And the 2 metres of Wise continues to improve his left arm rockets. I agree that the Redbacks are probably favourites to take out the trophies this year, and I see Tassie continuing the form they finished with last year and having a really good season. I might join the Lindsay Hassett club this season, but then again, with Fox Sports 3 promising to show a lot of domestic cricket, I might get lazy and just stay home and watch. I hope the FS3 coverage really helps state level cricket to blossom in Australia, as the Twenty20 has started to do.

South Aus on paper definitely look the strongest. Can't really see NSW doing much in the 4 day comp if our bowling from last year is anything to go by. Might come good in the 1 day format.
Henquries should be getting more of a run this season so that will be one to look out for.

Poached? :p I was under the impression they were quite willing to make the move of their own accord....anyway, this pushes Krezja out of the frame, although he's got the edge in the batting department, looking solid and coming in at like first drop for Balmain.

...which it isn't. The amount of quality pace options both under contract and on the fringe is amazing. And last season's second half was just....well, hard to describe

'Thought you never spelt sportsmans' names wrong :)

They've payed the price for dabbling in the development tray (such a sad expression) over the last few seasons, I guess- a wise move, really- and now, as you say, it may all come together with that blend of matured youth and superior experience....on all hinges. Could be a very exciting outfit to *watch* this season.
*damn you fox*

South Australia and NSW should be the teams to beat. Both have the strongest sides on paper. But if both sides play well and those fringe international players get called up regularly they may have some problems. NSW has Clarke, Bracken, Clark and MacGill and South Australia has Tait, Cullen, Cosgrove and Gillespie.

I also don't see Hauritz playing a game for NSW this season. MacGill, Casson, O'Keefe and Krezja should all be above Hauritz on the pecking order.

To Hauritz credit he outplayed Casson in grade cricket.

Bowling
Beau Casson - 10 Overs , 1\45
Nathan Hauritz - 10 overs , 0\18

Batting
Beau Casson - 14
Nathan Hauritz - 85*

I didn't want to talk up the Vics too much, but they have a pretty potent squad. Cameron White, Brad Hodge and David Hussey will come from the English season in fine touch; 1190 runs @ 59.50, 505 runs @ 101 and 1143 runs @ 47.62 respectively. Nick Jewell, Michael Klinger and Lloyd Mash will return looking for bigger things after a season in which they all established themselves as first choice players. Mash's 505 @ 33.66 in his debut Pura season could have been quite impressive had he converted fifties into big scores, while Jewell was the fifth most prolific scorer in the Pura Cup with 827 @ 41.35. Klinger struggled for consistency in the Pura Cup, but was a top performer in the one dayers.

The weakness probably lies in the bowling stocks. Most of our pacemen are rather young and the title of best Victorian fast bowler is certainly up for grabs, with Lewis our only experienced fast bowler. This lack of experience could leave us dependent on Warne. Luckily, he ought to be available most of the season, barring the Ashes in December/January.

Harwood?
Denton?
Wise?

We have a pretty strong bowling line-up, with 3 very good paceman, in Lewis, Harwood and Denton. Also Wise is a good bowler, so he is handy back-up. And then we have Moss and White as 4th and 5th bowling options. Worked very nicely last season.

I think the weakness is in our batting. We have good players, who can score runs, but are often too inconsistent to do so.

Pilon should be keeper ahead of Crosthwaite. Better gloveman and much more competent with the bat.

Anyone heard of John Hastings from NSW? Reading his profile looks like he could develop into an all rounder. Hes about McGrath's height and batting looks to be good in grade cricket.

Yeah, he's with Hawkesbury...my brother played him a few years ago, and I've heard quite alot about him in the past. Definitely one of the promising young first-graders going around. Henriques snared Casson the other day, batting at four.
Roden continues his hot form with the ball after taking another four-wicket haul (been very successful in those north/west/east/south merit games).

What about that Nannes? He's not exactly the youngest prospect in the Victorian pool, but apparently he's decent pace-wise and could earn a few games here and there..

Hopefully Vic can get the the pura cup final again, and win it... One plus is that we have Warne for a chunk of the season.

Roden seems to be coming along too, he should get a few games this season with Bracken and Clark likely to be on International duties. That will mean more of Bird, Bollinger and him :)
