"Driving" me mad!!

I 've tried several times to play 2004,spent a few hours in the nets trying to bat but for the life of me my batsman doesnt seem to respond to my key pressing.I've tried every combination and timing,whats going on.
I must be doing something wrong,heres what i do.....

In the nets wait for the ball to be bowled..

Hit S or w and a direction key(numpad) in the correct timing zone..

My batsman always plays a defensive ,lame shot never a drive or hook.

Somebody help me and please dont tell me to search the forums cos I have.

First make up your mind where you want to hit the ball, then hold in the direction keys where you want to hit, then wait for the ball to be in the right spot, then hit w or s to play either a backfoot or frontfoot shot while still holding in the direction keys.
