Eight injured in blasts outside Chinnaswamy stadium

Two low-intensity blasts outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, in which at least eight people sustained injuries, delayed the start of Saturday's match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, while another bomb was found and defused at a separate location outside the arena. The incidents cast a shadow over the tournament, whose semi-finals are to be held in Bangalore next week, and concern over security arrangements for those games.

The explosions took place outside gate No. 12 of the stadium about 30 minutes before the toss was scheduled to take place. The match was due to start at 4.00 pm but the toss was pushed back until 4.45 pm and the start of the game to 5.00pm. There were around 40,000 spectators inside the venue at the time of the blasts and security measures were tightened.

Initial reports indicated it was a generator blow-up, but police later clarified that was not the case. City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari said the blasts were low-intensity and resulted in minor injuries to security staff. "The explosive material was hidden in a plastic bag and placed near the wall adjacent to Gate No 12 of the stadium," he said.

The second bomb was found and defused outside gate no 8, while the IPL match was on.

The blasts did not create any panic inside the stadium; though there were no PA messages and the screens flashed a message saying only that the toss had been delayed, news of the blast was coming in from other sources yet fans kept their cool.

As an immediate response, police stepped up security measures at Eden Gardens, the venue of the day's second game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. No incidents were reported from that game.

However, the Bangalore incidents will raise questions at a wider level given that the ODI World Cup will be staged in India - and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - in less than a year from now.

Goes to show that security concerns had merit. Also wasn't a game delayed due to a bomb scare during the Champions League last year?

Thats all common in India man!

Our cops are damn best TBF! They just know how to trace out the bomb within no time!

But the another bomb, which would have been a great blow was traced by Cops, and wonderful duty of Cops there! If the one dismantled would have blown up, Including Players and Officials, everyone present at ground were going to become victims!

Binnu added 0 Minutes and 42 Seconds later...

And yeah, even one of my friend who went to stadium thought that it was a generator blast!
All the spectators inside thought the same!

good thing the terrorists were incompetent. Security for the rest of the matches should be military grade now.

It sounds like a case to scare the overseas cricketers and trying to make them feel that they are periliously close to being attacked. Shows how desperate some people are to make sure India also faces the same problem as Pakistan (with regards to touring of foreign sportsperson).

I get that feeling as well, since the police said it was a very small amount of explosive. Sounds more like a ploy for media hype and attention than a terrorist attack.

yeap I think the same, this is obviously done to create some terror among players. They want media attention, which they got. They are just doing it for creating terror.
BTW, Dharamsala and Kolkata have tighten their security already.

I know if I was a player, I would be seriously thinking about coming home. The bottom line is the security failed and explosives were planted in the ground and people could've been killed. Not worth risking you're life for money. I know Simon Doull might be coming home, he said It's not worth risking his life when he has a family at home.

No one is stopping them. They can go home on the very next available flight if they want to.

Sadly that can't be said for anyone coming home to England, Iceland ftl

Kevin Pietersen forced to play against will after bomb rocks IPL stadium - Times Online

Or perhaps not

KEVIN PIETERSEN was forced against his wishes to play a match in the Indian Premier League after two explosions near an entrance to Bangalore?s Chinnaswamy stadium yesterday injured 10 people, including four policemen and a security guard. A third bomb was found and defused

You've hit the nail on the head. I guess it's a new type of strategy adapted by the terrorists. If you don't have the strength or guts to launch a direct attack on the civilians/cricketers, then plant small quantities of explosives outside sensitive places like stadiums and create widespread panic. flinging scoundrels! Goes on to show that they are nothing but a bunch of lousy cowards.

Semifinals moved to Mumbai after explosions

IPL semi-finals moved to Mumbai | Cricket News | Indian Premier League 2010 | Cricinfo.com

The semi-finals of the 2010 IPL have been moved out of Bangalore and will be played at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The decision, announced by IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, was made following the two low-intensity blasts at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore shortly before the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians was due to begin on Saturday evening, and the recovery of two unexploded devices over the subsequent 24 hours.

So After the blast the semifinals moved to Mumbai. They will be played in DY Patil Stadium. so all the finals and play-off matches will be played there.

How lucky for Mumbai. One good thing is, if we (CSK) face RCB in the semis, RCB wont have home support to cling on (Chennai vs Bangalore is turning out to be one hell of a rivalry as far as fans goes).
