After being rocked on their ELA debut by the Adelaide Crows, Canberra were staring down something similar in this clash against former champions Hobart Tigers at 85/4 with Jasprit Bumrah finding some prodigious movement off the surface. It was here that Heinrich Klaasen, currently the world's foremost power-hitter came to the fore with a six-laden 89 off 71 balls containing 8 sixes. Josh Inglis also chipped in with a fifty, which saw Canberra finish with a somewhat bowlable 269 in spite of falling well short of reaching the 50-over mark courtesy of a Bumrah five-fer.

Hobart got nowhere close in the end, despite a stroke-filled debut at the top by the new sensation Josh Brown. Nobody else crossed 30 in the lineup, as Canberra collectively dismantled their opponents with each of their bowlers managing to claim a wicket. A win of this margin should also help improve their godawful NRR a good deal.

The two openers Fakhar Zaman and Marcus Harris bashed their way to a 130-run stand off the first 15 overs of the match, thereby putting the contest fairly in the hands of Melbourne. A total of 347 seemed somewhat underwhelming given their scoring rates, and could have been more had Kane Williamson and KL Rahul taken a slightly more proactive approach during their half-centuries. Such are the times we live in, where even an economy rate of 6 conceded by Mitch Marsh is to be commended.

A chase of nearly 350 was made to look fairly routine as Rohit Sharma and Rachin Ravindra kept WCF afloat in what would have previously been a long lost cause. They might have gotten there too, if the likes of Sam Whiteman, Ashton Turner and Scott Edwards hadn't dawdled around. It was the end overs accuracy of Kagiso Rabada and Mitchell Starc that prevailed in the end.

Rassie van der Dussen and Peter Handscomb played some good old-fashioned 50-overs cricket by anchoring Queensland's innings with 93 and 52 respectively, before a brief middle-order wobble induced by the pacy Lance Morris that saw them slump to 226/6. But the spectators present at the small ground were in for a treat as Singapore-born Tim David decided to do things the only way he knows, which is hitting sixes at will. He brought up a 27-ball fifty in the process hitting nothing other than sixes, before mistiming a couple of boundaries at the close to finish with 69 off just 39 balls with 7 sixes to his name.

If 340-odd could be very nearly chased in the previous game, so could 330 but only if the Roosters had mixed a bit of caution with their aggression. Staying true to their reputation with the bat, they started as if they meant to chase it down by the 35th over by scoring at nearly 10 an over. Even Virat Kohli brought up his fastest ever ELA fifty off just 27 balls, but that was about as good as it got. After the shellacking suffered at the top by their forefront pacers Mohammed Siraj and Naseem Shah, Queensland decided to slow things down by getting Daniel Sams and Marcus Stoinis to unleash their variations in pace with great effect. Sydney were bowled out by the 36th over still well ahead of their required rate.
