The Suns win the Inaugural Npower Regional Championship

What a final matchweek that was. The Red Rose who had been dominating the table since the very early stages had left a gap open by succumbing to a shock defeat to The Northerners the previous week. The Suns who had been on their tails for most of the tournament and the in-form East Midlands spearheaded by the England Vice Captain Alex Vixen and England Captain Richard Head respectively were looking to pounce. And it was the East Midlands who struck first blood, skittling The Westerlands for 71 measly runs, whereas both Red Rose and The Suns had lost quite a few cheap early wickets and it looked very promising for the Stags as they put 325. However, Dennis Barlow had rallied The Suns innings to get them 277 and Lawrence Rowntree and Eric Naismith limped the Red Rose to 203. And they continued to fight back, despite a strong start from West Midlands, they restricted them to only 272 with talismanic leg spinner Richard Carolyne leading the charge. This led to the situation at the end of day 2 leading into day 3 where, The Westerlands even though they were in a good position, had lost 5 wickets still and would require a miraculous effort to set a highly competitive chase. The Southern Coast were 380-7 at the close looking to eek maximum bonus points meant that The Suns were staring down the barrel. Meanwhile at Edgbaston, Red Rose had got off to a shaky start to their second innings but skipper Ben Sutherland and Lawrence Rowntree had seen them safely to stumps. Things took an expected direction, at the start of Day 3 with Southern Coast reaching 407 all out, Red Rose were bowled out for 280 leaving West Midlands a competitive 212 to win and Westerlands had been eventually bowled out by East Midlands for 376 leaving only 122 to which they comfortably did by mid afternoon. Whereas over in Birmingham, Mark Phillips had spun a web around the West Midlands top order leaving them 33-3. It was to the backdrop of this that Greek captain Daemon Moropoulos walked to the middle at The Oval to join a set Jonny Johnstone at 79-2 knowing that a big performance and a lot of luck was needed to give his team a chance of winning the NRC. Whispers filtered over The Oval and the stadium was filled with the buzz of West Midlands fighting back with first George Cook and Gustaw Walter and later Ronald Wellington and Mitchell Munday but in the middle, it was laser focus from Daemon and Jonny until the latter fell 9 runs short of his century followed quickly by Jack Ruttles. Then worse news, 4 quick wickets at Edgbaston felt like an icy dagger plunged deep into every Suns fan in the stadium and elsewhere and the worry that this might be for nought creeped back, their fate rested on Mitchell Munday and number 11 Mike Hopcutt with 13 left to win. The run total started to trickle down then Munday cut Phillips away for 4, it was 6 needed to win. Hopcutt on strike against Zachary Wilson, the senior and most experienced bowler in the Red Rose lineup and he wilted, bowled two wides over head height, then Hopcutt backing away managed to place the ball wide of deep third to allow him to return for 2 before blocking last ball of the over. 2 to win Sutherland last roll of the dice was to return to Carolyne but Munday was having none of it, backing away and cut it backward of point, piercing the ring field and reaching the fence for 4 more, sealing the Red Rose to no silverware and despair. A buzz lifted in the Oval late into the afternoon, they all realised that with how things stood, a win here would give them the title, and Daemon knew it too and he turned into a superhuman. Even with Dennis and Marsden falling late on day 3 with the latter falling on the last ball of the day, he kept batting and batting and runs kept flowing. Even when Vixen fell on the morning of day 4 and the tail began to fold he summoned one last surge with Graham Bates at the other end to get them to 382 when Bates' prodded defense to a short ball from Stuart Hume edged to Mark Crowe at slip. But he had done enough, an unbeaten herculean 161 had given the bowlers a massive chance. 253 to win. Steady start is proceeded by Southern Coast until Rafferty angles one across captain Crowe with a bit of extra zip that takes the edge to Stock at slip. Then it's the Suns skipper Alex Vixen to take up the mantle, dismissing internationals Matherson and Corden-Cox in quick sucession, former knicking off to the keeper and latter chipping to mid on. Vic Bradley and Ben Burley try and mount a comeback before disaster strikes, Burley trying to come back for a second is agonisingly run out just short of his ground. Then Bradley is bowled backthrough he gate by a Marsden googly followed quickly by possibly last hope Jim Malick chopping on to a ball just outside off by Brian Adams. Binden offered no resistance either, top edging a sweep to sub fielder Pointer at short fine leg. Carl Wright then was yorked by Brian Adams and it had pretty much closed all likelihood of a Southern Coast win now with only bowlers left. Tony Richards tried valiantly but in vain, to claw some dignity back for his team but with May sunshine beating down, Alex Vixen brought himself back on and in his first over back traps Hume lbw with an arm ball. Oakes and Richards then cobble together some hacked boundaries but eventually the skipper got one pitching on middle to turn and bounce past Oakes' outside edge and strike the top of off stump. The bails went flying into the air and with them so did every fan inside The Oval and the 11 players on the field to celebrate what had been a rollercoaster 4 days of cricket.
