Hawk-Eye, the global pioneer in ball tracking technology for sports broadcasting and officiating, has been bought by the Wisden Group, the owners of Cricinfo.

Mark Getty, a director of Wisden Group, said that the acquisition was a coup for the group which would strengthen its presence in the global cricket market and provide an entry into tennis and other major international sports.

Wonder what this means for Cricket and whether or not cricinfo will now display hawk-eye images. Possibly a sign that hawk-eye is coming to the aid of umpires in the near future.

Hawk-eye images on cricinfo-looks interesting.

And it looks like hawk-eye will soon become an official tool in international cricket that will judge leg before decissions. But I am not a big fan of this because then we cannot judge who is a good umpire andd who is a bad umpire. LBW decissions are one of the major things that judges the quality of an umpire. At least I think so.

OFFTOPIC: I wonder what's the use of hawk-eye in sports other than cricket and tennis :p.

I was wondering just the other day if it could be used in football for goal line disputes, where it is unclear if ball has crossed the line. Having said that football seems to be less willing to use technology aids to help with decisions than even cricket. Personally I'd like to see it available to umpires at internationals but only as a guide to decisions rather than an absolute.

in one of the youth world cups they actually trialled balls with sensors in them. there were cameras set up around the park and in the goal. this allowed officials and coaches to know exactly where the ball was at all times. there was also a sensor on the goal line so that referees could tell when the ball crossed the line. this then sent a signal to the referees watch which game up with "goal". im not sure what age that was but its in the trial stages.

Not good. Most test innings would last for around 40 overs if it were to be introduced as an official tool.

Exactly. And sometimes it is not correct. As it is a machine and not a man, it makes mistakes.

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Don't tell me that you (a man I presume) have never made a mistake.

Yup...machines would be more accurate than refrees and will make very accurate decisions but that means that teams won't be able to make big totals...

I should have told that machines often make mistakes too. The hawk-eye system works on a computer programme(I think so) and sometimes some dismissals which often appear to be pointless through naked eye appears to be true through hawk-eye.

Exactly, that's technology for you. You may be sure that the ball was going over or down the leg side but Hawk Eye would have got it right. It's 99% correct. Not always right, but still much more accurate than umpires.

Machines don't make mistakes when they're programmed correctly (usually). That's why your calculator never gets it wrong. However as they say, GIGO - Garbage In Garbage Out

well said adarsh. It would be interesting to have the hawk eye pictures of every ball on the live scores, something that obviously is about to happen whether it be in 5 weeks or 5 years, its coming

i think it would be great to bring hawkeye in football hey, I wonder if it comes to baseball and it would be interesting and if it is used in olympics that would be awesome man!!!!!!!!!!!!!
