Shane Bond is returning to New Zealand from Sri Lanka to have his back injury examined and treated by a specialist.

Bond strained his lower back while bowling during last Sunday's match against Pakistan and he will have an MRI scan on his return to New Zealand to determine the specific nature and the extent of the injury.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden said Bond will take no further part in the tri-series between the TelstraClear Black Caps, Sri Lanka and Pakistan and that he will be returning to New Zealand within the next few days.

"Shane was to be examined by a specialist when the team reached Colombo today but, because of the unpredictable weather in Colombo, the remaining games in the tri-series are now being played in Dambulla, so that opportunity has gone.

"In any event the injury does not appear to be improving at a rate that would allow Shane to play again in this series, so it makes sense for him to return home where he can be professionally diagnosed and treated."
