Today was one of those days where even throwing the ball to Bart King couldn't solve everything for ROTW, as Graeme Pollock, AB de Villiers and Jimmy Sinclair made good use of the batting-friendly conditions to score half-centuries. Instead, it was Afghan leggie Rashid Khan who impressed with figures of 5 for 124 after having bowled tirelessly for 38 overs. South Africa finished with a total of 451 and a lead of sizeable lead of 158.

ROTW were bowled out for just 210 in response, setting South Africa a paltry target of 53 with two sessions remaining in the match. They might not have needed to bat again with Hugh Tayfield bowling the way he was, but for a defiant 40 from Bart King who finally provided a glimpse of his batting ability after having aggregated only 26 runs from his last five innings.

Bowling first wasn't a particularly bad call by New Zealand considering the ball was moving around, which helped them get all three of Arthur Morris, Bob Simpson and Don Bradman quite early. That's when they ran into a solid brick wall in the form of Steven Smith and Allan Border, who would go on to add 167 runs for the 4th wicket to put Australia back on track. The former scored a brilliant 140 off 340 balls and the latter 90 off 198 balls, as a New Zealand bowling attack missing Shane Bond appeared powerless for a period lasting almost 65 overs before they finally managed to remove Border just ten short of a century. Australia finished with a very impressive 439 for their first innings.

It's not every day that you see another batsman upstage Don Bradman, which is exactly what Steven Smith did in the first innings. But Bradman would have none of it in the second innings, where he proved his superiority over all other batsmen with a magnificent unbeaten 150 off 234 balls. Smith meanwhile brought up his second ton of the match and added a massive 267-run partnership with the former, thereby well and truly burying New Zealand under a massive lead of 520.

Zimbabwe, despite starting well had the misfortune of running into Mahela Jayawardene at the one venue on planet earth where he is absolutely invincible. He eased his way to a quickfire century, whilst Aravinda de Silva added a century of his own and helped Sri Lanka to a total of 553.

On a truly vile pitch at the Queen's Park Oval, even Ireland's seemingly innocuous medium-paced bowling attack were made to look threatening. India finished with a lead of exactly 100, which could have been more if not for the brilliance of Graeme Swann who claimed 5 for 95 from 41 overs. Like England, they too failed to convert fifties into hundreds. Perhaps the most frustrating of all was how Rahul Dravid, a player renowned for his skills of concentration took off for a needless single and got himself run out for 72.

England fared much better with the bat in the second innings. Ironically it was KS Ranjitsinhji, an Indian who did most of the run scoring for them as he dominated the Indian bowling attack during his classy innings of 130. They had set India a challenging target of 245 with a day remaining in the match. It will be interesting to see if India actually go after their target or take the safe option of playing out a draw.

While the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar appeared to be in the mood for a draw, Kapil Dev seemed to have other ideas. His unbeaten 49 off 50 balls very nearly pulled it off for India, only for them to run out of time in a rather tense finish and fall just 2 runs short in an extremely eerie twist of fate. It was only too similar to a match that had taken place between India and the West Indies some years previously at this very venue.
