Martin Crowe, New Zealand's greatest ever batsman had been left out of their XI for all but one match thus far in favor of John Wright, predominantly an opening batsman who had been moved into an unfamiliar position in the middle order for some reason. This time, common sense finally prevailed and Crowe showed New Zealand what they had been missing with a peerless 127 against a ROTW bowling lineup bolstered by the return of the legendary Bart King. New Zealand posted a formidable 494/9 for their first innings, with both Crowe and Glenn Turner scoring centuries.

The ROTW batsmen with the exception of George Patterson found the going tough against a fired up Richard Collinge who ran in hard to claim 4 for 54 off his 29 overs after being promoted to share the new ball with his old bowling partner Richard Hadlee. They went on to concede a sizeable 164-run lead to the New Zealanders for the first innings.

New Zealand had set ROTW a very intimidating target of 379 with the best part of three sessions remaining in the match. There was a feeling they could have been slightly quicker in making their declaration which only came about early morning on the 5th day after skipper Brendon McCullum walked in to smash Rashid Khan for consecutive sixes before declaring the innings.

The American Old West had its fair share of gunslingers, serial killers, axe murderers, lawmen and badass presidents - but only one truly great cricketer, and his name was George Patterson. The legendary Philadelphian almost single-handedly helped ROTW escape with a draw by scoring a defiant century whilst none of his team-mates could cross even 50. This was it for ROTW's campaign though.

After some good batting at the top from Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka were given an unexpected flourish towards the end by their bowling mainstays Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan, who scored 59 and 30 respectively to frustrate the South African bowlers. In the process, Sri Lanka went from 322/8 to 380 all out.

With the exception of Barry Richards, Jacques Kallis and Graeme Pollock, South Africa's batsmen were all at sea against Rangana Herath's canny left-arm spin, which fetched him 5 wickets at the cost of 66 runs for the innings. South Africa were bowled out for 256, thereby conceding a 124-run lead to the Sri Lankans.

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene blazed quickfire half-centuries to help Sri Lanka set South Africa a daunting target of 364 with a day and a half remaining in the Test. It could have been more, if not for a brilliant comeback five-fer from the legendary Hugh Tayfield after having gone wicketless in the first innings.

South Africa did what they do better than most i.e block and block, and block again until the match was over and they were safely over the line. It got pretty close in the end with Muttiah Muralitharan dismissing Bert Vogler and flushing out their No 11 batsman Allan Donald in the process, but the latter managed to hang on for two more deliveries much to Sri Lanka's anguish. South Africa escaped with a draw and in the process kept their hopes alive for a playoff berth, whereas a defeat would have all but knocked them out. That was that for Sri Lanka's campaign, one of their better ones going by their awful LAB record. One couldn't help but feel for Rangana Herath, who finished the match with a ten-fer, completely overshadowing his legendary bowling partner Muralitharan for a change.

Four players i.e Don Bradman, Clem Hill, Steven Smith and Richie Benaud scored more than 50 in Australia's big first innings total of 504, though oddly no one could bring up three figures. They also scored their runs at nearly 4 an over to add to Zimbabwe's woes. Nevertheless, John Traicos managed to hold his head up high with a 5-wicket haul against the strongest batting lineup of the competition.

Victory appeared certain for Australia, but it was a great effort nonetheless from Zimbabwe to take the match into the 5th day when a 4th day finish appeared likely. They posted a very impressive 436 with Dave Houghton leading the way with a gritty century and Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Brendan Taylor and Sikandar Raza with half-centuries. Meanwhile, Benaud capped a brilliant match for himself by claiming a 5-wicket haul to finish the match with 8 wickets along with a score of 80 with the bat.

The Indians despite looking mostly at ease on a spinning wicket were far from comfortable when up against legendary Irish leggie Jimmy Boucher, who claimed 5 for 80 off 37 overs. Despite a few middle-order hiccups following Sachin Tendulkar's dismissal for 105 (his 4th century of the tournament), they posted an intimidating 470 on the back of a resilient lower-order partnership between Polly Umrigar and Kapil Dev, who added 106 runs for the 7th wicket.

The Irish batsmen had no clue whatsoever as to which way the ball was turning, as shown by three ducks in their top six. If not for Robert Poore and Kevin O'Brien's half-centuries, they might not have even gone past 100. Anil Kumble claimed 6 for 45 in conditions tailor-made for his style of bowling.

Ireland's batsmen looked slightly more assured in the second innings, but the result wasn't all that different. They were bundled out for 222 with Kumble starring again as their chief tormentor. He finished the game with a cheap 10-wicket match haul at the cost of 101 runs across both innings, thus ensuring India didn't have to bat again. India, now sitting pretty on 77 points had just made things a whole lot tougher for England (60 points), West Indies (58 points) and Pakistan (57 points) in the race to the playoffs from Group B.

Having endured a miserable time thus far scoring only 41 runs from 5 innings in the tournament, Viv Richards stepped up when the going was toughest against Pakistan's formidable pace trio of Wasim Akram, Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz. He plundered 180 runs off 254 balls out of a total of 389, and remained unbeaten whilst the rest of his team-mates fell prey to Akram, who claimed 7 for 84 off 29.5 overs to make some of West Indies' most prominent batting names appear like mere mortals.

West Indies' five-strong bowling attack were all over the Pakistani batsmen reducing them to 125/6, before skipper Imran Khan came to the rescue with a valiant century from No 7. He first helped them avoid the follow on by adding 52 runs with Wasim Akram, and then would go on to add 64 and 42 with Abdul Qadir and Sarfraz Nawaz respectively before becoming the last man out with the score at 292. His effort had cut Pakistan's first innings deficit down to 97 runs.

For all the talk of a 1000-run scorecard, the West Indies' famed top seven could only muster a little more than 150 runs (164 to be exact) between themselves and that figure could have been a lot less if not for Viv Richards' 62. Imran Khan, after having braved their mighty pace attack struck back with a vengeance to claim 5 for 28 off 15 overs to thoroughly dismantle the Caribbean lineup, who were only able to post 214 for their second innings. Still, they had managed to set Pakistan a very steep target of 312 which is no easy task considering the bowling attack they possess.

Pakistan chased it down quite stunningly with one wicket to spare on the back of a masterful knock of 114 from Javed Miandad and some valuable contributions in the lower-order. Having aggregated only 191 runs at an average of 27.29 thus far, Pakistan's greatest batsman couldn't have possibly chosen a better time to deliver a big innings. His dismissal by Curtly Ambrose, who was doing everything in his power to help the West Indies stave off defeat saw things get pretty tense in the end, but some great resilience shown by the tailenders eventually saw Pakistan prevail and claim revenge for their defeat in the final of Season IX to the same opponents.
West Indies, perhaps the strongest team on paper in the competition were knocked out, leaving Pakistan on 78 points - one more than arch-rivals India who will be desperately hoping for England to draw against Bangladesh in the final match of the group stages. Else, it will be Pakistan and England to go through to the playoffs.

Bangladesh were 248 runs in arrears at the end of their first innings and were consequently made to follow on. Frank Woolley exploited the turn on offer and some poor shot selection from the Bangladeshi batsmen to claim 4 for 71 off 23 overs. Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim were the only ones to make it past fifty in the innings.

Bangladesh decided to go down swinging with Mohammad Ashraful and Mahmudullah scoring attractive 80s, and Mashrafe Mortaza taking England's bowlers by surprise to smash 72 off just 74 balls in a ruthless display of lower-order striking. Great to see us going to he playoffs. Hopefully the best team will win this tournament. In the meantime, it would be a cracker of a contest against Bradman's Australia. Hopefully this time, there will not be a draw.
Extremely disappointing to see us get knocked out like that. We had a great opportunity to capitalise on their poor batting performance in the first innings and we squandered it.

Explanation on pitch types Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper. Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive. Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines. Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals. Green - A lot of movement on offer early on, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Batting expected to become easier as the match progresses. Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on. Poor - Uneven bounce and a huge amount of turn on offer for spinners. Expect a slow hard grind where most batsmen rarely score at above 2 an over.
