Hayden's tally of 1391 in 2001 was then third only to Viv Richards and Sunil Gavaskar in a calendar year. Starting with that Indian series, Hayden made 2560 runs in 25 Tests, with 11 centuries, including a run of eight in 13 Tests, prompting Steve Waugh to compare him with the incomparable - Donald Bradman.

Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2003 Report:

119 v Pakistan, 2nd Test, Sharjah, 2002
Hit in the head early by Shoaib Akhtar, Hayden recovered and taunted the bowler by asking "is that all you've got?" Mostly he showed his physical strength in temperatures that pushed the half-century mark and forced some of the bowlers to deliver one-over spells. When he was ninth-out he had batted for 431 minutes; nobody else passed 50 in the game and he outscored Pakistan, who fell for 59 and 53. Akhtar was near his peak that year, but Hayden was better.

Five of the Best:

January 1997 - Scores his first Test century when he makes 125 against West Indies at the Adelaide Oval. His hundred took four and a half hours and his effort was overshadowed by Michael Bevan taking ten wickets for the match.

February 2002 - Rounds out one of the purplest patches imaginable when he scores 122 in Johannesburg. It is the fourth consecutive Test in which he has made a century. He narrowly misses making it five in a row when he is dismissed for 96 in Cape Town.
Wins the Allan Border Medal following a terrific 12 months in which he scored 1509 Test runs at 71.85. His tally of 1391 Test runs in the 2001 calendar year had been an Australian record.

January 2003 - Is named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year.

April 2007 - Finishes Australia's successful World Cup campaign in the Caribbean as the tournament's leading run scorer with 659 runs at 73.22 including three centuries, none of which came against minnows.

Congrats Bigman :clap tomorrow is by Birthday, so gift me a Ton :D

100 Tests, that's certainly an impressive feat. He's definitely one of the greatest openers of the modern era, if not the greatest. Incredibly consistent at both Test and ODi level. The only thing that's stopping him from being regarded as the best of all-time, is his poor record when the ball is moving. His relatively poor record in New Zealand and England stops him from being one of the greats of all-time. He's had a fantastic career thus far, I can't honestly see him getting too many more Test caps though tbh, he struggled in India, and didn't have a good start against New Zealand, if he doesn't make a ton in the NZ series he could be out. There's no doubting his achievements though.

Incredibly achievement by an incredible cricketer. The achievement is all the more impressive when you take into account how formindable the Australian's batting line up and the competition for places has been during the period in which has been in the side.

Punter has said he wants Haydos in for the Ashes.

Great work Haydos, a truly great player but I feel if he can't get a ton on a pitch that averages 500, Punter might have contradict himself. But I dont want to worry about that now.

Hopefully he can do a Ponting and get 2 100's in his 100th test.

If you can play 100 tests and average over 50, you have something going for ya! Well done mate, awesome achievement.

Matthew Hayden, Sunil Gavaskar, Len Hutten, Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe, Graeme Smith, Virender Sehwag, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes.

Hayden is the only one out of them all to open the batting in every single Test innings that he has been apart of and his done that for 100 Tests now.
