The new selection panel has been announced and as anticipated Dilip Vengsarkar has replaced Kiran More as the chairman of selectors, and Venkatpathy Raju replaces VB Chandrashekar, both reasonable appointments imo as both are well known cricketers.

However this is how the selection panel looks at the moment:

Selectors said:
Dilip Vengsarkar-Chairman

Venkatpathy Raju-South Zone

Ranjib Biswal -East Zone

Sanjay Jagdale-Central Zone

Bhupinder Singh Sr-North Zone

Now,how many of us have heard of the people apart from the first 2,not many would be the answers.Apparently the others have only represented India in FC Cricket. So should such people be a part of the selection panel.

Id like to bring up something I saw in Sportscenter(News programme) yesterday,an idea proposed by Mr Sunil Gavaskar which Id like you all to read.

Idea by Mr Gavaskar said:
1)Selectors should be players on whom the country has confidence on and players whom the general Indian public knows.

2)The best 5 selectors from throughout the country must be chosen, irrespective of what zone they represent.

3)They must then be alloted zones in which they monitor regional, and first class cricket and it is not necessary that the selector belongs to that zone.

4)Selectors must be paid for their job.

I quite like his ideas and I think that the BCCI should be looking to implement something similar in their selection plans.Im personally amazed to hear that they arent being paid in the first place, especially when they play such a crucial role.

The points made by Mr. Gavaskar are pretty much obvious and should have already been followed by the Indian board. (or any other board for that matter).

You are right Sid.
These ppl - biswas, jagdale and singh sr.Well they might have played Ranji and stuff.
But its definatelt stupid to have them on the committee.

I dont think that being great players make for great selectors. A selector should have good knowledge of the game. First class players may have that more than international players. Being not able to to play international cricket is a limitaion of there cricketing skill. I dont believe that selectors position should be exclusively for former international players.

Perhaps selectors with FC experience might be capable to make decent selections, but the problem lies that if a slightly dubious decision is made then we all doubt the abilities of the individual, whereas if he was a well known international player,we could still have some faith on that person.

The only points I agree with Mr. Gavaskar is that the selectors should be the best in the nation irregardless of zone and then be assigned zones. Payment should be given based on the performance of the selections. :P It sounds a little farfetched, but that way there is some sort of incentive for selectors to pick good players and not politically charged ones.

I think it's difficult to judge who is a good selector and who isn't. With a player performance based salary, I think that'll be sorted out.

Mr. More was a well known international player. But doubts were cast on his ability coz of the Ganguly issue.
