I know i give help to others but this time i am stumped.

I am being allowed an Nvidia 8500GT for my B'day. NOw i am confused if i should buy it. Maybe you guys need to know my needs before you give your advice.

I have never been a deep graphics freak. I can play games at 640 * 480 if its a compulsion. I prefer running games a bit shitily or maybe at lower settings than not running at all. I rarely play those Huge games like STALKER and FEAR which are very demanding. Because i dont like the genre of the FPS / Action RTS and the like. I may play them rarely, and i assume that any card in the geforce 8 series can atleast run them at lowest settings if its playable. Correct me please if i am wrong. I normally play Sports / rAcing games, but am somewhat fascinated by Crysis. I hope that it will atleast run at lowest settings.

That doesnt mean i dont want high graphics. I do want them as far as budget allows. I mean my performance to budget ratio is 40 - 60 . So i hope you are getting my needs.

So i need advice to whether get an Nvidia 8500Gt. I need to know if atleast it delivers the 6600GT / 7600GT performance. IS it that necessary to leave it and opt for 8600GT which is virtually double of it ? Will an 8500GT be enough to satisfy my needS ?

Thanks
Kshitiz

Providing you dont want to game over 1024x768 this card should be fine for you. Its the low end of Nvidia's mid range cards. It will sturggle with demanding games, but should run other fairly easily. Its main drawback like with all mid range cards for Nvidia, and quite possibly soon to be ati is the limited and now out of date 128-bit memory bus width. This will ensure, it will never handle the big games.

A 8600GT is almost as fast as a 8600GTS, so actually looks to be a better deal than the 8500GT, however they both still have the dissapointing 128-bit memory bus width.

Thats my take on your choice. ;)

running games at reso lower that 800x600 really puts strain on your eye.
also, if u own a LCD monitor , this strain is increased to huge levels.

but, 8500GT can play any game of today at high reso, don't know about crysis but it should be playable on this baby. last i heared crytek team said 6600GT is the lowest supported.

Thanks guys - You all have been a great help for me :) Now i wont be worried about my birthday present :)

@ leo, no i use a CRT monitor because in that case i love CRT's :D

So i derive that this card can handle the current games all at 1024 * 768 or if not that atleast at 800*600 ( CRT :D ) . For future games like Crysis ( DX 10 ), 1024 * 768 is not sure but 800 * 600 is thoughtful and 640 * 480 is guaranteed :D . Am i right ?

Also i have heard that this card can be given some overclocks. I am buying the XFX version because i think they are best at graphics cards. I am a overclocker so shall i gain from it ? :D

( I have ordered the card after reading all your replies :) Thank you, now this info is required for after purposes of the card :D )

hey gas whats youre take on the 512 Mb 8600 nvidia card? has it got better performance compared to the 7900GS 512MB card?

Hey guys i got my 8500GT, and its one hell of a card for my monitor. I have one slight problem.

I got a wrong mobo which had a PCI E X4 slot, but surprisingly it looks like a PCI - E . I got this mobo by mistake - http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=775i945GZ&s=Intel , instead of the 945G. SO this one says X4 slot. The card fits in and is working. When i run CPU - Z , it says in the graphics section -

Link width - X4 . Max Supported - X16

does that mean my card is working at 4 times the less speed ? or its operating at x16 only ? Do i need to change my mobo for that ? Please help :D

Yup, you will have to. Its got AGI slot, first time I have heard of it.

It refers to the bandwidth the card receives Kishitz. x4 and x8 are agp speed, x16 is pci express, if your card is capable of it, you should have it.
