I have always been a bit of an all rounder, I started off as right arm leg spin, but within the last year, I have been changing to a right hand fast/medium fast.

I have always had little probles before with back trouble, (I have played in about 30ish games since changing) these range from stiff back,to back spasams, and yesterday, we did a little practise 40 over game in training, I bowled my 8 overs, but after 2 overs, I was feeling a tingling sensation in my back, I knew straight away it shouldn't be there.

I carried on bowling, but I noticed when the sensation came my bowling was way-ward, (Too wide, Too short etc), I had a word with my captain and he took me out of the attack for 20 overs.

I came back on, and after my first ball the tingling was back again. I managed to finish my 8 overs, but my figures of 8-0-76-0 show how much difficulty I was in.

I managed to bat aswell, but again this tingling was coming back, I managed to grin and bear it, but I only managed to get 30.

I had a word with the physio and he doesn't know yet what caused my back to have these tingling sensations. I also felt a bit stiff in my left ankle (The one I did Ligament damage to not so long ago) my bowling coach says my run up and bowling action is about 75% like Andrew Flintoffs, the same with my follow through after delievering the ball (The way Flintoff brings his legs in from the outside in) But, I know Freddie has had problems with his ankle and Not his back, but If my run up, Delievery and follow through is 75% like Freddie's, why am I feeling these back tinglings?

Also, does anyone know why they are affecting my bowling? As I have got up today and my back is very stiff!. Does anyone know how I can change my bowing to stop the tingling and back problems? in order to help my bowling talent, and keep it on target?

Help! :help

Ok as for the ankle, Flintoff had a huge problem where he planted his foot in the wrong position and if you watched him in slo mo his ankle was under a lot of stress...I hope hes changed it now.

As for the back, it could be a mixed action, which is not good. Try and get a coach to watch your hip and shoulder alignment on delivery to make sure they are pointing the same way. There are 3 basic accepted variations to the action, each is fine.

Front on - You are completely chest on to the batsman

Side on - Your imaginary lines(hips and shoulders) are pointing straight down the wicket

Midway - Lots of slight variations, the usual one is the imaginary lines are pointing to the slip cordon

So you have to find out what your lower body does when you hit your delivery stride, because its very very hard to change, and then accomodate the top half of your action to fit it.

Ah. I get you now.

I just wasnt sure why I hadn't had any ankle problems seen as I have a weak ankle and the way I run is very stressful on it, (its too hard to explain it).

I next have training tomorrow, so I could get the coach to have a look at my body shape, is it easy to change if he finds a difference?

yea, the top half is easy to change, you should find it comfortable after the first training session.

Dont try and change the bottom half though, its almost impossible.

Ah, Ok, thanks very much for the help, I will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Reps for great help!

Right I will go and check this in magazine that I have but I remember reading that if you have lower back problems you may have done something to your back or the tingling sensation is connected to something in your ankle. Let me get back to you on this,

Ok thanks mate.

Hockey gives me a soar back because im always bending down all the time(trust me thats the only time im bending down:p).

Anyway whats your bowling action like?

I've always believed that when bowling, you automatically bowl with an action which makes the best use of your body and abilities. That is, your natural bowling action shouldn't put your body under any stress. Thats why a few friends of mine with strong arms and upper bodies bowl with more muscular, bustling actions, and others bowl off longer runups or release the ball using their wrist or fingers more.

Try bowling with an action that comes naturally and see if that hurts.

If this action is your natural action, or it is stroed in your muscle memory, then you probably need to see a doctor or need a break.

my uncle playing first class cricket in pak. he used to be a fast bowler but he injured his back or something so the doctor said that he should do fast bowler anymore because it was serious. so now i think he does off spin

haha
first i used to be a legspinner but i thought i was an off spinner but in reality i was doing the googly over and over again. then i became a fast bowler, and now im sort of a leg spinner, but dont no how to do a googly, but can get massive turn with leg break!

DPRA: If your coach cannot give a conclusive conclusion or if he thinks that your action is fine, perhaps you should look to post a video of your action to see if we can see any unnatural twisting that your coach may have missed.

used to have an almost carbon copy of flintoffs action. I had alot of knee and back problems. I think it could be down to the fact that its a front on action. I now have a much more different and side-on action and haven't suffered from any problems. I'd say best thing to do would be to try and re-model your action in the off-season. I think I suffered from a "tingling" sensation. also had a pain that felt like something pulling when I bowled. re-modeling your action can be length as its taken me about 5-6 action changes and most of the season to get it right, comfortable and effective. off-season is best time to do it though it gives you a little more freedom time scale wise. thats my advice and its worked for me.

Actually a lot of coaches think the front on action is better for the body, thats why a lot of bowlers now use it.

A lot more international standard bowlers bowl more open than they used to up to the 90s, where so many bowled side on.

Do NOT see a chiropractor, they just place the verterbrae back into place but do not solve the problem as it will occur again, see a physiotherpist
