Found an interesting thread on CW about averages in the 2nd innings, interesting enough Bradman only averaged 97 in the 1st innings but 104 in the 2nd innings. Weekes is one I've never heard of but he was only behind Bradman when it came to batting in the 1st innings. You also find guys like Ponting, Tendulkar, Lara are much better in their 1st innings compared to the 2nd.

Batting 1st innings

Batting 2nd innings

Bowling 1st innings

Bowling 2nd innings

I'm not an advocate of the stats only method of assessing players, but those stats suggest murali was the dominant force in the 2nd innings. his strike rate, average and economy is better than warnes.

warne will never play second fiddle to muralitharan by any great margin in overall assessment, but stats wise there is nothing to support his cause that he was better.

some numbers kallis has though in the second innings.

gavaskar and border too.

I had the wickets thing on but yes the rest of the stats Murali had. But that's not the point of this thread we have enough for the Murali v Warne ones around. There isn't much to compare with the bowlers as its the same ones for both innings.

But the batting you start seeing names that you normally don't see. Weekes is one I've never heard of but he was only behind Bradman when it came to batting in the 1st innings. You also find guys like Ponting, Tendulkar, Lara are much better in their 1st innings compared to the 2nd.

1st innings goes to Murali which isn't too surprising given the majroity of his pitches take turn from day 1.
Cue 200 pages of Warne vs Murali, but if you cut the matches in Sri Lanka out, you can see that Murali was not exactly invulnerable to a good day 1 pitch.

Interesting how much better Courtney Walsh was in the 2nd innings then 1st.

I've taken that comment out, don't want another Murali v Warne thread. Its about looking at the comparison for players between their 1st and 2nd innings.

I noticed McGrath had an almost identical record for both 1st and 2nd innings. Hadlee was the same. Lillee was best used in the 1st innings.

Crickey look at Sehwag - flat track bully :laugh

Matthew Hayden on the other hand, is better in the 2nd innings despite his reputation as a flat track bully.

sehwag used to be notoriously bad in the 2nd innings. His 154 in his comeback against aus was not expected coming in the 5th day.

sangakkara has great numbers in the second innings, hadn't noticed that but yeah thinking about it, he's dug in and scored big a couple of times.

it's interesting that the great batsmen of the 80s have more favourable 2nd innings scores than the ones of today, thinking about it though, most of the best bowlers were all fast men, hadlee, the windies quartets, imran, even india's best bowler was kapil dev then. Whereas the late 90s and 00s saw spin take off, which goes maybe some way to explaining that.

Muhammad Yousaf has the best average in 2nd inning, that's great but he is 15th by average in 2st innings strange fact for me.

Stats only reveal half truth. Never fan of them. I like to mostly comment on what I see.

Yeah but we talking just about stats here.
BY looking just at stats afridi is just nothing but still when ever he use to bat or bowl, every one feels there is something going to be happen.

Graeme Smith is very good in the 4th innings. I remember his 154* against England to seal our first ever series win in England. Then he also scored 105 in the 414 chase.

Yeah that's a bit of a shocker Syl! They were the original three Ws before we stole the nickname for our two Ws. :p

I don't really follow my cricket history tbh :p I know a few English and a number of Aussies, the rest are just the common names you hear like Viv, Sobers and the WI fab 4.
