The build-up to the Ashes is analogous in many ways (from an English point of view at least) to the release of a new cricket game. The 2005 victory was like BLIC2005; full of hope and promise and purporting to lead to great things. The 5-0 crushing was BLIC2007; England had major pacing issues and their human intelligence was poor. To continue to stretch the metaphor, the 2009 Ashes was International Cricket 10. Lacking star quality but a solid performance against weak opposition. The black cloud on the horizon was what happened when you tried to play outside the country you were in. Online broken. Ashes not won overseas since 1987.
All the signs are that Ashes Cricket 11 will be a success in both ways. The team are building from a solid base, there has been continuity of personnel and they have learnt from feedback. There are star performers in both teams and surely the technical errors can be eradicated or at least minimised.
Yet how many times have we waited with bated-breath and over-hyped expectations? How many times have we thought we were there only to have it cruelly snatched away? It?s easy to reminisce about the past and wonder why we can?t apply the same formula for success but times have moved on. Things have changed.
So fire up your consoles and ensure that even if we?re let down on the field there will be one small corner of a PS3 option file that is forever England.
