They could have roped in Rahman, he is Tamil IIRC.

Prabhu Deva. And the crowd cheered for him more than they cheered for Amitabh or Salman.

He is not as big a celebrity in Tamil these days as he has gotten completely behind the camera. He had a brief peak period in the 90's when he burst onto the scene, thats all. As BlitzBerg says, AR Rahman would have been a great choice. In fact, he is an international star and so the entire India would have connected with him.

Nothing personal, but the whole ceremony was crap. Was expecting it to be amazing, but didn't live up to it at all
