I have been hearing for the past 10 years that Jayasuriya changed the entire ODI approach in 1996 with his invention of over the top hitting,
Cos his method of play won sri Lanka the world cup now it seems to me that everyone is under the impression that Jayasuriya was responsible for this approach.

Infact it was Saeed Anwar, Aamer Sohail and Rameez Raja who started this trend in the late 80's and those who have been watching the 1992 World Cup highlights on ESPN Classic will see that Rameez was constantly hitting over the top while opening.

No disrespect to Jaya but the truth is the truth and just cos he won Sri Lanka the world cup in this method doesnt mean everyone has to go overboard and exaggerate like this.

Jaya is still a legend but the tag of him changing the ODI game is undeserved

no i am not,
they used to approach every innings with an over the top hitting style so i believe they started it off.

Jayasuriya just made it famous in 1996 cos it won his team the world cup in a way so the tag has bee attached to him

Well, people had been hitting the top. I doubt many argue that. But Jayasuriya did it very very successfully. That's the big difference.

The fist player to do it was actually Mark Greatbach of New Zealand.
And the sooner you drop the horribly one eyed biasedness towards Pakistan, the more people might start taking your opinion seriously.

Yes, in your view it was them who started it off, when in fact you cant be bothered doing research....

Niether can i but then again i dont start pointless biased threads

Ok them guys did do it but they're no where near the first nor the best, the best at the moment in Adam Gilchrist, IN MY OPINION!

after jayasuriya it was Shahid Afridi

I'm sure people knew how to slog and give their wicket away long before Mr. Afridi decided the forward defense was a waste of time.

Well Afridi Don't really give a dame if he gets out or not
he just hits it where ever he like

Often straight up.

Afridi is a dangerous player but isn't in the same league as Jayasuriya in terms of being a One Day pioneer.

It was Mark Greatbatch for New Zealand in the 1992 World Cup. England tryed a similar thing with Botham but more sedate. Period.

afridi we can say is the master brain behind the 20/20 format
And yet his Twenty20 average less than 20.:laugh

Jayasuriya is credited because he was very succesful in hitting over the top which made others adopt the same tactics.

Exactly, Jayasuriya has a brain as well as brawn.

So your saying he can hit it wherever he likes. So whenever he hits it in the air to a fielder (as so often happens) he is match fixing?
