Payne announced as England coach
English cricket will start a new era under Lee Payne
The England and Wales Cricket Board have announced that enthusiast and broadcaster Lee Payne will succeed Duncan Fletcher as coach of the national team.
Payne is 14 years old and he was a writer for the television show Howzat For An Apprentice? which aimed to hire a suitable coach for a cricket team in the United States.
"I think from my work with Howzat For An Apprentice? I know what it takes to be a successful coach. I am an avid fan of England, it is an absolute honour to take charge of them." he said.
Lee Payne will begin has career with a series of three test matches, one Twenty20 International and five one day internationals against the West Indies, followed by a series of four test matches and five one day internationals against India.
"The first series of his career will really test him, because he will be new to the job and he will experience all three formats of the game - test matches, Twenty20 Internationals and one day internationals." said chairman of selectors David Graveney.
Payne will work with batting coach Andy Flower and bowling coach Allan Donald and his first task will be to select which players will be awarded central contracts for the new season.
The reaction from the fans is still to be seen - this could, however, be a long and winding road for English cricket.
