1857 County Cricket Championship

After a rich history of matches between teams chosen to represent counties, and the honorary title of Champion County being awarded on that basis, the Marylebone Cricket Club has worked with the County Teams to create a formal competition structure by which the title of Champion County can be awarded strictly on merit.

It includes the eight pre-eminent cricketing counties of the time: Cambridgeshire, Kent, Lancashire, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire, Surrey, Sussex and Yorkshire. Some of these county teams played sparingly, with cricket in The North being particularly dominated by teams from Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.

The Marylebone Cricket Club hopes that the competition can be a success.

In our real-life timeline, the County Championship was not initiated until 1890, even though the playing of County Matches dated back to long before then. This competition gets underway more than 30 years prior to that.

Standings

Although teams will not be guaranteed an equal amount of fixtures, the MCC's points system will ensure a meritorious Champion.

|Played|Won|Drawn|Lost|Points
Middlesex |3|2|0|1| 1 |
Nottinghamshire |3|2|0|1| 1 |
Cambridgeshire |1|1|0|0| 1 |
Lancashire |2|1|0|1| 0 |
Surrey |4|2|0|2| 0 |
Yorkshire |2|1|0|1| 0 |
Kent |3|1|0|2| -1 |
Sussex |2|0|0|2| -2 |
For every win, a county gains one point; for every loss, a county loses one point.

Okay, I know this is a pretty niche league, so I'm not expecting everyone to rush in at once; that's why I'll make it first-come first-serve (although I will reserve the right to make room for one or two of my favourite managers if they don't sign up in time).

Once you have a team, you can start arranging fixtures with other managers immediately.

Finally, I would strongly recommend that you research cricket from the era as part of your management duties. Don't just write a batsman off because they average 13; some of the very best batsmen played on wickets "curated" by the likes of Lumpy Stevens.

Would it be ok to manage Yorkshire?
I don’t mind if a favourite manager turns up I can sit it out would be fine with that and would fully understand.
