It was perhaps the most shocking moment in the history of the Olympic Games. Don Bradman, the greatest batsman in the world at the very peak of his cricketing career, was out bowled for a duck to a ball that kept a lot lower than he had expected. It was just the second duck of his international career and his first ever in the Olympics. Herbert Wookey, who had dismissed the legendary Clem Hill in his first Olympic campaign all the way back in 1908 at the age of 20, had now claimed his soon to be successor as far as Olympic and Test batting records are concerned at the age of 44 in what may very well be his final Olympic campaign. Australia were off to a very poor start having lost all of Ponsford, Woodfull, Bradman and Kippax cheaply, but recovered well to finish with 241 upon the completion of their 50-over quota due to the efforts of Laurie Nash and a resilient lower-order. They were also helped by the many extras conceded by the Canadian bowlers, who despite bowling well were also shown to be very much lacking in discipline with the ball.

The Canadians batted quite positively in response and for a while had the Australians on the run before Bert Ironmonger's double strike in the 35th over, where he dismissed the well set Clarke Bell and Laurie Wright to expose two new and untested batsman to the crease. The Australians rallied to win the match as one might have expected, by a margin of 67 runs. Canada, despite losing the match had earned the respect of many by doing what no team could manage before - handing Bradman his first duck in an Olympic match. His batting average had now dipped to 149.75 from a previously unbelievable 199.67 after 7 matches.

We got the win, which is more important than anything.

:facepalm ... We bowled well, considering Don Bradman going for a duck, but our batting was shite.

CK-Nayudu-and-Lala-Amarnath-coming-out-to-bat-during-the-First-Test-Match-against-England-in-Bombay.jpg

The Indian skipper CK Nayudu (standing left) struck a fluent half-century from No 5 following a poor start at the top of the order by India. He added 81 runs for the 4th wicket alongside Wazir Ali, which was to be the only significant partnership in the Indian innings as they folded for an underwhelming 187. Meanwhile, South Africa's new ball pair of Sandy Bell and Neville Quinn, considered by some to be their best till date, continued to trouble batsmen with their unerring accuracy with the ball.

Amar Singh and Jahangir Khan struck very early for India, removing Jack Siedle and Jock Cameron for 1 each. They were unable to capitalize on this advantageous position however, with Bruce Mitchell and the legendary Herbie Taylor adding a century partnership for the 3rd wicket. Mitchell raced to a quickfire half-century at a run-a-ball, while the experienced Taylor took a lot longer to reach the mark off 83 balls. He continued batting till the end, finishing unbeaten on 79 off 110 balls and bringing up his team's victory with a four. In doing so, Taylor had now become just the second South African batsman following Dave Nourse to go past 500 runs in an Olympic career, and just the eighth overall following Clem Hill, Victor Trumper, Bart King, Jack Hobbs, Dave Nourse, Bill Ponsford and Don Bradman. With 516 runs at an average of 46.91 as of this match, he is currently just 31 runs short of overtaking Nourse to become South Africa's all-time leading run-scorer in the Olympics. Though not the same dominating batsman he once was at the age of 43 and playing in his final Olympic campaign, one can expect him to get there without much trouble especially if South Africa win their next game and qualify for the semi-finals.

Great Britain posted an intimidating 246 on the back on Wally Hammond scoring his second half-century on the trot. It was an impressive effort though by Argentina, who seemed to have them in trouble at one stage at 160/5. Herbert Dorning, at the age of 58 continued to impress one and all as he knocked over both Herbert Sutcliffe and KS Duleepsinhji during his 10-over spell for which he conceded only 30 runs against a very strong batting lineup. His career record currently stood at 39 wickets at 18.15 from 22 matches between 1900 and 1932, which meant he was just two short of equalling the legendary American Bart King's record of 41 wickets in the Olympics. Argentina have an uphill task of qualifying for the semi-finals with them basically needing to win their last group match against India, which could very well mean Dorning has just one match remaining in his Olympic career in which he has to pick a minimum of 3 wickets if he is to claim the record for himself.

Harold Larwood returned to his devastating best picking 5 for 33 to bowl Great Britain to a convincing 85-run victory and consequently a semi-final berth. It was his first ever 5-wicket haul in the Olympics. Argentina would now need to win their final group match at all costs if they are to qualify for the semi-finals ahead of South Africa, and possibly give Herbert Dorning an extra match to claim the all-time leading wicket-taker record.

Lineup rules

1) A proper wicket-keeper (:wk:/:wkb:) in your XI.
2) A minimum of 6 players marked to bowl.
3) Players ruled out due to injury cannot be selected.
4) Lineup restrictions/quotas as mentioned in the match details must be followed.
5) I don't usually wait more than 72 hours for lineups in this league.

Player rarities

In each squad, players have been marked with these icons to give you a fair idea of their playing skills and overall usefulness to your team.

:purpo: - Legend. Used for the players that are undoubtedly the best of the lot.
:goldo: - Gold. Used for players with a high level of consistency and ability to deliver during key moments.
:redo: - Ruby. Used for players that are extremely talented and can play in a way no one else can replicate.
:slvo: - Silver. Used for players that aren't as talented as their Gold/Ruby/Legend contemporaries, but still capable of holding their own against the best in business.
:bro: - Bronze. Used for players that are a level below Silver. They are more likely to put in good performances than players from the Sapphire/Crystal category.
:blueo: - Sapphire/Crystal. Used for players that are inexperienced or with a lower skill set compared to those from a higher category. They could either put in good performances or fail miserably.

Statistics

Will give it a go over the coming weekend, which should be in time for the next round of matches.

Explanation on pitch types

Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Green - A lot of movement on offer, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Quite regular to find in most European countries.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way.
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.

Fingleton in for Ponsford.
