England in Australia limited overs series

I expect every patriotic Aussie to be supporting England in this game, just because Tony Abbott may have influenced team selection, and he's a total idiot.

Well so far the aussies look well on top. England look a bit short of a good enough total, 62/3 in ODIs isn't clever and even less so when one batsman takes 23 balls to score just 3.

Good middle and late order efforts from Balance, Morgan and yes, Buttler, if his fan on here can get over where he is going to bat in the order this is the kind of innings I was talking about him scoring (more often) You have to score runs when you're in the middle, not be pandered to by batting higher/wherever.

Anyway, England aren't having any joy bowling, a new look England bowling attack and despite Stokes playing the aussies could walk it from here as there is no fifth bowler. The only balance England the England side seems to boast is in name.

You can go in with four bowlers in Tests, you can get away with it in some ODIs, but it is a massive gamble and the problem is England don't realise when they win using it it is in spite of it not because of it.

England won't even come close to winning a World Cup until they work out how to bat, take wickets and generally just approach the modern ODI.

The total was about 20-30 light, and England's attack pretty blunt with no seeming long term plan. 0-3 down in the Test series they play Broad and Anderson in two dead rubber matches, then rest them for the ODI when it means something !?!?!? :facepalm

I think we need an aussie in charge, for me Flower was the best batsman keeper but not the coach or mentality England needs

Solid performance from Australia. Strange decision from England not to a play a spinner though.

Did anyone else find this match really boring, didn't watch much but I guess ODIs just aren't doing it for me these days.

Just such a poor selection from England. I appreciate Root has done well recently in ODIs, but he's just so out of form that he shouldn't have played. You need 5 specialist bowlers these days with the new regs. We could have managed that with Bopara as the 6th option. Even if they didn't fancy playing Tredwell after the tap he got in the home series, then they should have picked someone else in the squad.

Crazy from Cook to criticise the bowlers too, we didn't score enough because of another poor start. If we're going to load the batting, then at least have the confidence to chase, because we're not going to defend much with 4 and a half bowlers.

I was always in favour of the Cook, Bell, Trott 1-2-3 when others felt it was too conservative. However after watching today's game, it is obvious that we will never win a world cup abroad unless we are prepared to bring a faster scorer into 1, or perhaps even 2 of those slots. By playing Root, we are just slowing down his career progression. The best thing he could do is get away from the national side and play domestically for a year. Letting him go out there against international bowlers when he is so out of form isn't doing anything for his mental state.

The possibilities for the top order, based on performances last year, seem to be Kieswetter, Wright, Davies, Cobb. The other one who didn't have such a good season in the pro 40 but has impressed in the t20's is Alex Hales. I would personally have Pietersen opening with Cook, and then depending on the conditions and the opposition, have Bell or Wright batting at 3. Interesting to hear the Big Bash commentators discuss the fact that they couldn't understand how Wright isn't in out one day plans. Seems to be rated quite highly down under.

The other area missing in the team that will often win you tournaments is either a mystery spinner, a fantastic death bowler or a really quick bowler. Most decent sides have one of those, but we don't. Looking around the country, we certainly don't have the first option and I haven't seen anyone on sky bowl really good death overs that weren't overseas players like Alfonso Thomas or Azurullah. Therefore, I think it might be time to pick somebody like Overton or Mills. Overton preferably, as I think Mills would be too expensive. I suppose Finn could be that turn to bowler if he can get his action and head right.

I might even go as far to say Cook position in the ODI team should come under scrutiny - despite him not disgracing himself. ENG have had the most dour ODI top 3 in a long while. Make Cook a test specialist. Best ODI top three for ENG going into the world cup: Hales, Bell, KP.

I don't think England have ever taken advantage of powerplays and played aggressive cricket despite it being an issue for as long as I can remember so I'm not sure if it can be classed as an issue anymore, now I just take it for granted that we will be 40-1 after 10 overs if we're lucky. Ballance played nicely though, shame everyone with him kept getting themselves out.

Ye Root is short of form & confidence, but with Tredwell rightfully benched because i don't think he isn't good enough - Root provided some spin, which would be useful especially when it comes to over-rates.

I would have picked Danny Briggs - but like Hales, the selectors seem to view him as a T20 specialist. They can't afford to be that narrow minded with Swann gone now.

So you're saying that Danny Briggs is a better bowler than Tredwell??

No, i don't think believe ENG have a good spinner for any format now that Swann is gone.

But if its we are going to at least try one for the sake of it, i would have given Briggs a go. He is young and could possibly have some use in the future. Makes no sense picking Tredwell as the spinner & don't play him - if they don't rate him as i suspect, leave him out.

Hales' technique is god awful, War. I wouldn't have him anywhere near the ODI side. Only really a good puller of the cricket ball.

Anyone else found Jordan impressive yesterday? As Mike Hussey said, thought he was very unlucky to not get a 3/4 fer yesterday. Does make the new ball talk..

Also not liking how Finn is being ill treated in this tour. He's so much better than Rankin it's not even close.

That's a bit harsh on Hales - calling his technique "awful" is a bit over the top - even though its not exactly textbook. Trescothick wasn't texbook.

On Jordan yea, he was very good - West Indies let a serious bowling talent slip through to us.
