Social Networking - Good/Bad?

We have seen a lot of sites come up on social networking such as MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, Orkut and so on. Do you guys think that such social networking sites are good for the current (and future) generations or is it a hindrance?

Personally I feel it depends on how we use it. Its a good mode to find and catch up with old friends who you knew in the past, but visiting such sites to update what you are doing each and every second and what others are up to is not a really good practice.

If you are not cautious it can deadly tool. Next time you post "I am going to Paris" on you wall, dont be surprised to come back and see your house robbed.

Recently on Orkut.

a son of business man Adnan was kidnapped by his own friends in the name of a girl who Adnan met on Orkut, they faked to met her and then killed and abducted the boy on highway (he was 17)

On FB

A girl in her early 20's found her pics used in a porn site featuring here photo, juts imagine what she has gone through.


This are just two highlights, there are thousands of cases, film stars are the main target their fake profile is created with their cell number and all.


Social networking sites = bane and harm imo.

its great for keeping in touch with long distance friends and family.
but can be a pain in the ass for the other useless things.

As long as you have a brain cell or two, they can hardly be bad apart from if someone is being cyber bullied. They make it so much easier to organise things and contact people.

^ sure, you are right, as long as you have the proper privacy settings, Facebook and the lot are a stalkers dream.

I personally quit my account after I had family members trying to add me that I did not care for. Apparently I have cousins I did not know about and they feel the need to catch up on our life experiences so far.... no thanks

Great post chetan0304 after seeing that post i was 100 percent with you.Lots of cases of bad things with people because of social sites.It should be stopped or people should not make their avatar as their own photos and they should add their relative and friend not unknown person.

How many times should we all tell you to please post in such a manner that we can atleast read it?

Imo it is how we use these sites personally and do not get into things which can lead us into trouble.

How you retrieve your passwords? Use hint questions. Social Networking is best way to get that hint.
