How do you connect two PC's can it be done using USB cables ?

my problem is I don't have 2 moniters and I want to transfer some data frm my PC to my friends PC so will it work ?

Simply plug in an ethernet cable in a LAN port if it is available in both the computers. (Most probably it is.. they are generally built in nowadays.)

Another thing u could do is, Take out the hard disk of one computer, and put it in the other as a Slave.
Now you can easily transfer the Data from One Hard disk to the other.
This is a much better way, coz u dont have 2 monitors, and configuring a LAN could be a major issue with XP...

If you do connect with a lan cable though, make sure its cross linked. It means that the connections on two ends should be opposite. A normal cable to interconnect two computers wont work.

For e.g, If order of the connections of one end of a port is

1 2 3 4 5

then the other one must be

5 4 3 2 1

unlike standard ethernet ports which are

1 2 3 4 5 again.

Also, connecting them can be quite a pain for you if you dont have good knowledge of networking. For starters, you need to configure both ip's as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 respectively, with Gateway for both being 192.168.0.1. There's much more to it though I am afraid.

How much data is it? A good alternative could be getting 2-3 dual layer dvd's and using them :)

And yes, connecting both hard disks together is probably the best method. You do have to handle the hard disks with utmost care though. One drop can wreck it.

Easiest way is to use ancient method. Get a pen drive. It is USB.

Yes dear I have 2 of them but the problem is the data is around 20 GB which is too much for my little 2 GB Pen Drive

The cable you need to connect two pc's together without a router or whatever is a crossover cable. We have one connecting our two pc's. However i have never been able to get file sharing/transferring between the two pc's working.

I use windows xp network setup wizard in control panel for our lan.

Lan games work fine, but sharing files over our network doesn't.

If that is the case then as Abhas said, make the second PC's harddisk as slave disk and you can transfer the data from one harddrive to other. PC Connectivity will cost more and probably waste your time even. Just remember to check Jumper settings.

I have seen this in my computer engineer's office but I don't remember how to do this clearly any help on this would be appreciated

Most hard disk are master so there is no need to change the master drive jumper. You can use CD Drives connectors (Bus cable and Power cable). Now check the hard disk you want to make slave. Jumper is a small black jacket which you will find at the back where all attachments are done.

As in above image the second slots are used for slave. Please check your hard drive though. Its mentioned there.
