0.99999... = 1

Numbers are not tangible on their own though, but people are so the comparison is poor.

It is

(2a-a) + (2b-b) = (2c-c)
2a - a + 2b - b = 2c - c
2a + 2b - 2c = a + b - c

HOWEVER C = a + b

Therefore, it is:

2a + 2b - 2(a+b) = a + b - (a+b)
2a + 2b - 2a + 2b = a + b - a - b
0 = 0

:)

And 1/3 is NOT equal to 0.33333. What it is equal to is 0.3333 infinity, meaning it will not end from now till the end of time. Therefor, we cannot multiply it by 3.

okay i have another way of proving 0.999999999999... = 1

let p = 0.99999999999.......9 -- A.
Multiply by 10 :
10 p = 9.999999999999....9 -- B.

B - A
10 p - p = 9.9999999....9 - 0.99999999...9

Since the numbers after the decimal extend till infinity, these can be cancelled.

9 p = 9

therefore, p = 1

Hence, 0.9999999999.......9 = 1

I know this method, its for finding fractional counterparts for non terminating decimals.

But then what I said, then Zorax pointed out, and I'm saying again, you shouldn't be able to perform any operations on infinitely extending numbers, because the moment you perform that function, another place will be produced. So .3333 x 3 != 0.9999

Its all a web really. Though I refuse to believe that they are same, because two real numbers can't have the same value.

(a + b - c) = (a + b - a - b) = 0 though so you're dividing by 0 in that line which gives infinity.

I know that (Note the smilie at the end 2 = 1). Actually, I fooled my math teacher with it and eventually told the trick! Couldn't you keep it quiet to fool Mat? :p

Actually 0.99999... is an equality which many students (including me) find hard to believe.

As a matter of fact, 1/3 does indeed equal 0.333...

.3333 x 3 = 0.9999 because we multiply it as every other place is produced.

I think after all, it is up to us to believe it or not.

My bombshell post of the day

1/3 cannot be accurately represented in decimal format. Never has, never is, and never will be to come :p

There's no end to it!
That's why they call it infinity ;)

Reminds me of one of my favourite Red Dwarf quotes

Ah, Kryten; just thinking. Assuming of course we're not dealing with five-dimensional objects in a basic Euclidean geometric universe and given the essential premise that all geo-mathematics is based on the hideously limiting notion that one plus one equals two, and not as Astemeyer correctly postulates that one and two are in fact the same thing observed from different precepts, the theoretical shape described by Siddus must therefore be a poly-dri-doc-deca-wee-hedron-a-hexa-sexa-hedro-adicon-a-di-bi-dolly-he-deca-dodron. Everything else is poppycock. Isn't that so?

Allow me to further reiterate; no matter what anyone says, 1 is 1. That means that the number 1, means 1. As in 1 bag of sugar, 1 mobile phone, 1 erect nipple etc. You don't go to the chippy and say "can I have 0.99999 bag of chips please" do you? 1 is 1.

Then you'll keep on multiplying it for your entire life... :p
