Do we need a ban list here?

I've brought this up with staff on MSN before but now let's see what the others think. Some forums have a stickied, closed thread listing all the members that are banned and the reasons for these bans, as well as the length of them. We often have situations here where we are left wondering why some members are banned (Highlander being a big one) and end up spamming the forum to find out. A simple ban list would be a simple place to immediately find this information out. What do you think?

A massive yes. But for some reason don't like saying why a member was banned. God knows why... its a forum, not the secret service.

It is my view that moderation is done in private, and that it is up to individual members to disclose their reason for being banned by their own means, most obviously, via MSN etc. with people they are in contact with.

As the relevant posts are deleted, people will see 'username banned for abusing other members' or something and then look at their posts and see nothing, for an obvious reason.

Yes, there are some upsides to it, but I think on balance it doesn't achieve a desirable outcome.

Surely if you are banned you shouldn't have the right to keep it private. People don't mean anything sinister, they just want to know why it is some people have been banned.

Most bans are fairly short minor ones, I don't think it is productive in the majority of the cases for a name and shame approach to bans.

A closed stuck thread creates more questions than answers, a short line is almost never enough to give the circumstances behind a ban.

Quite frankly it's none of anyone's business why other members have been banned. If you are friendly with that person chances are you can contact the person through facebook, msn, or another forum. If you are not that friendly why are you interested? other than just curiosity I can't really think of a valid reason for needing to know.

If people don't know what a member is banned then why do they need to know? If it is controversial then I have little doubt some other member will quiz the mods over it and some "official" comment made.

Can't see the point in a banned list, most would probably be for abuse, being a spammer or spanner. Perhaps instead the mods could put a banned reason (code) in the banned member's signature, something simple and uncomplicated. eg "banned for spamming". I'm sure whatever the crime is, it isn't something joe public members need to know, I doubt the forum is so "in the loop" it can ban paedos, rap ists, rap artists and man utd fans - well maybe the latter should be :D

Maybe only if they give you their permission to say why they're banned.

I'd like one, when some people get banned I have no idea why and a list would be appreciated.

I also against ban list as many time a new user gets a ban because he don't know many things about PC and he learns from his mistakes,it will be awful if we will made fun of such a user. But I also want that there must be a list of habitual banners and spammers and they must be strictly deal.

It would be nice to have a ban list just stating how long the person has been banned for, you don't need to say why.

The ban list wouldn't be about making fun of banned members, it would be a simple source of information for members to find out why a member has been cast off. I don't buy into the stuff about a simple sentence being inadequate either, just put 'spamming' or whatever and write at the bottom of the thread that if you want to find out more speak to the member in question.

yes in that sense a ban list will be helpful as lots of member in PC plays for online cricket and many even not have other source of contact then PC so that list will provide them the information when the member will comeback.
