In any form of cricket the fielding department is as important as the bowling, batting and Captaincy.

One of the reasons Australia and South Africa are performing so well and consistently is the fact that apart from having a good batting, bowling lineup and shrewdly led, their fielding is of the highest quality and across the board. That is not to say other teams do not have quality fielders. England, Sri Lanka ,India, New Zealand also have a few fielders of top quality, but not across board.

A fielder is expected to field the ball and stop runs - regulation and difficult ones, take regulation and half chances that come their way and also to execute run outs regular and complex ones.

Any shortcomings in any of the fielders functions mentioned above can cost the bowling side dearly. More so if it happens in the case of a Star or a well set batsman.

This Endeavour is to identify the top fielders that have played Test and One Day Cricket.

A word of caution guys

No two person are born or think the same So guys, be respectful of other?s opinion(s) or selection if it does not match your expectations or selection.

Criteria

Readers can post anywhere from 1 to 12 as they feel comfortable.

The objective is to see from a broader perspective through the input of others

It is though sharing that we get enriched.

Here?s my 11 favorites with a twelfth man (lol!) as well.

1.Jhonty Rhodes
2.Paul Collinwood
3.Mohammad Azharuddin
4.Ricky Ponting
5.AB de Villiers
6.Mohammd Kaif
7.Andrew Symonds
8.Hershelle gibbs
9.Yuvraj Singh
10.Roshan Mahanama
11.Shahid Afridi

12th man Tillakaratne Dilshan

Good luck!

Imran Nazir is by far better fielder than Shahid Afridi.

it depends at what. slip fielders, close in fielders and fielders in the deep all require different skills.

I might put AB higher, but ponting has been terrific lately.

slip fielders Kallis was great, as was matt hayden.

slip fielders of spin bowling Dravid and Jayawardene.

Joe Denly. Been watching him for a few years now and he's absolutely terrific in the field.

i am much impressed of recent performance about Roelof van der Merwe he is excellent fielder and great aggressive player
what about David Warner

of new guys I like Duminy, he's incredibly quick in the outfield, a great boundary saver.

no mention of Dilshan?

Mathews looks handy as well.

Jimmy Anderson is definitly one of the best fast bowlers in the field.

current worst fielder i have seen monty panesar, munaf patel, danish kaneria, mohd yusuf, saeed rasel,

Dilshan, de Villiers, Bravo, Ponting, Collingwood.

According to some WI great Gus Logie was one of the best short leg fielders they have ever seen.

Bravo did a lot of his fake dives in the IPL and he dropped a few sitters in the process. However he is a good fielder , no doubt.

Putting a different twist, the best pace bowlers in the field I've seen are Lee, Johnson, Anderson and you could put Flintoff for his slips catching. Probably are others I've missed but you don't get much better than the first three for bowlers in the field.

I think Shoaib Malik is Pakistan's best fielder at the moment, not Afridi.
