Adam Hollioake and his men did a pretty good job after solid middle-order performances from Chandana Aravinda and Hasantha Fernando. They scored 44 and 41 runs, respectively. Jimmy Ormond picked 2 wickets, but was really expensive. Adam Hollioake, the captain himself, was easily the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets for just 21 runs. Azhar Mahmood also picked 3 wickets, but at the expense of 30 runs.​

SUMMARY​

In 2004, the very first edition of the Champions League was played in England. It consisted of only three teams, and all of the matches were played at The Oval in London.
Played between teams from Sri Lanka, South Africa and the hosts; England. It featured only four games, including the final. Which too, was played at The Oval.
Though, the league only consisted of three teams, it carried great significance because its success could have a huge impact on the future of the twenty20 format.

The tournament was won by the Diamond Eagles of South Africa as they beat the hosts; Surrey Lions by a narrow margin of 17 runs in the final. It was a close encounter.
During the pool games, all three participants won one game and lost one game. Chilaw Marians finished with a poorer net run-rate, hence failed to make it to the final.

Craig Thyssen of the Diamond Eagles was the highest run-scorer of the season with 114 runs from 3 games. He scored a match-winning 76 against Surrey in the pool stage.
Surrey Lions' captain; Adam Hollioake was the leading wicket-taker and the second highest run-scorer of the tournament. He was awarded the player of the series award.
Adam Hollioake was truly the best player throughout the league, but his heroics were just not enough to make sure that Surrey Lions would lift the trophy in the end.
His 4/21 from a full 4-over quota was the best figure for any bowler in the tournament. That performance came against the Chilaw Marians in the tournament opener.

MATCH OF THE TOURNAMENT​

2nd Pool Match, Surrey Lions vs Diamond Eagles - Diamond Eagles won by 2 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)
The Oval, London

Played on a cracked, hard and dry wicket. This match was a scintillating encounter between the homeland heroes, the Surrey Lions and the Diamond Eagles.
Surrey Lions' captain, Adam Hollioake elected to bat first after winning the toss. He thought that there was more in the pitch for teams batting first.

It was up to his batsmen to prove him right. Surrey raced off to a fantastic start with 15 runs coming off the very first over that was bowled by Cliffe Deacon.
However, the hit-out-or-get-out approach didn't do Mark Ramprakash any favours, as he basically threw his wicket away, looking for a quick cheeky, single.
Surrey Lions continued their quick-scoring strategy in spite of losing Mark Ramprakash very early, and because of that decision, they lost 2 more wickets.

Allan Donald also struck in the 6th over, leaving Surrey Lions 56/4 at the end of it. Adam Hollioake and Rikki Clarke slowed down the pace to recover from the blows.
They added a massive 76-run partnership for the 5th wicket before they were dismissed by Thandi Tshabalala in the 16th over, one after the other.
Surrey Lions' lower-order and tail collapsed, leaving them bowled-out on, what was, an above par total of 153. They had 10 balls to spare in the innings, though.

Diamond Eagles started off shaky, as they lost Boeta Dippenaar and Morne van Wyk, both to run outs. Loots Bosman skied one high and was back in the hut in no time.
In all this calamity, the Diamond Eagles didn't let their run-rate drop and scored quick runs regardless. They were 42/3 at the end of the 4th over.

But constant wickets kept them under pressure, and with Adam Hollioake striking in the next over, dismissing Cliffe Deacon for only 6 off 5 deliveries.
It became pretty obvious that the Surrey Lions were eyeing to win this match by bowling them out, because the Diamond Eagles could not be restricted.
Craig Thyssen batted maturely and played a gritty knock, and in doing so, he reached his 50 in just 34 deliveries. Diamond Eagles were 114/4 with 5 overs to go.

With 40 runs needed of 30 balls, and a well-set Craig Thyssen who was timing the ball oh-so very well, it seemed like Diamond Eagles were going to cruise home.
But an error from Nicky Boje ended the partnership and gave Surrey Lions a glimpse of hope. Craig Thyssen was visibly angry at Nicky Boje's misjudgement.
In the next over, Tim Murtagh clean-bowled Craig Thyssen with an absolute peach of a delivery to capitalise on the shift in momentum after Nicky Boje's wicket.

The pressure seamed to have mounted on the Diamond Eagles. They lost Johan van der Wath and Roger Telemachus in the space 5 deliveries.
With 14 needed of 12 balls, and just 3 wickets remaining. Two big sixes from Mandla Mashimbyi out of the blue pretty much sealed the deal for the Diamond Eagles.
Diamond Eagles won in the end, and though, Craig Thyssen was the clear difference-maker. It would be a sin to not praise Mandla Mashimbyi's two sixes in the end.

In the very first game of the tournament, Adam Hollioake produced an exceptional bowling performance to dismiss the Chilaw Marians for a mediocre total.
He dismissed both the openers, very early in the innings. He then brought himself back into the attack to clean-up the tail-end of the opposition's batting line.

His bowling performance was a crucial part of Surrey Lions' comfortable, and successful run chase of 145, which they completed with 6 wickets and 14 balls to spare.
Chilaw Marians had no clue how to even survive him, and so, for a performance like this, it was no surprise that he was awarded the player of the match award.

Diamond Eagles played their first game of the season against the homeland heroes, the Surrey Lions. Who, had already gotten off to a great start in the tournament.
The former were given the ball to bowl after they lost the toss. They did a satisfactory job by bowling the Surrey Lions out for, perhaps, an above par total of 153.

It was, however, Craig Thyssen's innings in the 153-run run chase that stole the limelight from the Diamond Eagles' bowlers, and even the Surrey Lions' batsmen.
He played a gritty innings of 76 runs from 57 delivers, batting at number 5. This innings came after the Diamond Eagles' top-order had completely collapsed.
This innings saved the Diamond Eagles from a defeat, and helped them cross over the line very narrowly. In the end, they won by 2 wickets, and with 4 balls to spare.
