Surrey County Cricket Club announced details of an exhibition match set to take place at The Oval later this month. This marquee fixture will pit Surrey, last year's Twenty20 Cup champions, against South Africa’s own 20/20 titleholders, the Diamond Eagles. Dubbed “the clash of champions,” this exhibition will take place on June 30, two days before this year's Twenty20 Cup begins, giving fans a glimpse into the explosive action yet to come.
Organized in conjunction with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket South Africa (CSA), the match highlights a key moment in international club cricket, bringing together the winners of the only two 20/20 leagues in the world. The involvement of two national cricket boards underscores the match’s importance, as the 20/20 format continues to grow in popularity and appeal among fans in the UK and globally.
The exhibition match has been in the works since mid-May, following the Diamond Eagles' historic victory as the inaugural champions of South Africa’s newly established 20/20 league. Once their win was confirmed, Surrey quickly entered into discussions to make this rare showdown a reality.
Surrey CCC President Derek Newton expressed his excitement about the event: “This unique contest between champion sides from two different nations will no doubt be a spectacle.” He then further added, “It will have a positive impact on the overall perception of 20/20 cricket in the UK.”
