James Anderson and Paul Collingwood kept England in the World Cup with a stunning 112-run victory over Pakistan in their World Cup group A match on Saturday.

A gritty batting performance by Paul Collingwood helped England set a competitive total of 246 for eight after their near disaster at 118 for five.

Anderson produced a superb display of controlled bowling that resulted in a total collapse of the Pakistani top order with a spell of four for 29. For his superb bowling performance he was awarded the man-of-the-match.

Andrew Caddick struck first for England, as he dismissed Shahid Afridi, caught by Alec Stewart behind the wicket.

Then Anderson came into the attack and the top order batsmen Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Saeed Anwar and Rashid Latif, were sent back to the pavilion.

Andrew Flintoff then dismissed Younis Khan in his very first over. Craig White then first ball up bowled Abdur Razzaq. In White's third over, Wasim Akram was caught by Ashley Giles at long-leg. Three balls later, White dismissed Waqar Younis, as the ball looped up to Knight in the gully.

Shoaib Akhtar who top scored with 21 runs off 16 balls, with five fours and three sixes was soon bowled by Flintoff that sealed England's victory.

Earlier in the day, Nasser Hussain won the toss and elected to bat first. Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi and Saqlain Mushtaq who took two a piece during the Pakistan attack shared the wickets. Shoaib Akhtar was clocked at bowling a ball at 161.3kph the fastest delivery ever recorded, but he proved to be very expensive as he conceded 63 runs off the 9 overs he bowled.

England lost wickets early with Waqar and Wasim accounting for the top three with 59 on the board. However a half-century partnership between Vaughan and Alec Stewarthelped in settling the innings.

Soon Shoaib brought the crucial breakthrough dismissing Vaughan for 52 with Afridi bowling out Stewart for 30. Andrew Flintoff followed on 26 and England were in deep trouble.

Collingwood then went about shaping a respectable total for England. He put on 34 run stand with Craig White for the seventh-wicket. The tail enders supported him well and soon they managed to reach 246 off the allotted 50 overs.

England will now play India in Durban on Wednesday, while Pakistan will meet India at Centurion next Saturday, which will decide their place in the next stage.
