101 cricketers sever ties with ICL

June 02, 2009 16:35 IST
Former internationals Rohan Gavaskar, Deep Dasgupta and Hemang Badani are among 101 cricketers who have severed links with the rebel Indian Cricket League and applied to the Board of Control for Cricket in India to return to the fold under the amnesty scheme that ended May 31.

Seventy-nine current and 11 former Test cricketers -- including ex-captain Ajit Wadekar and off-spin legend Erapalli Prasanna -- have taken advantage of the amnesty scheme launched for those linked with the Subash Chandra-promoted rebel league, the BCCI said.

Significantly, India's only World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev [Images], who is chairman of the ICL's Executive Board, and former Test stumper and ex-chief selector Kiran More, haven't severed relations with the league.

"The BCCI, after scrutinising the requests, has written to the concerned state associations that these players are eligible to play in the domestic tournaments for this year," said BCCI secretary N Srinivasan.

"Guidelines with respect to participation in Indian Premier League [Images] will be intimated in due course," he said.

The Board has already decided that such persons will have to serve a one-year cooling off period before becoming eligible to play international cricket for the country.

Other ex-Test cricketers who have delinked from the ICL and rejoined the BCCI fold are: Sandeep Patil, Madan Lal, Karsan Ghavri, Balwinder Sandhu, Ashok Malhotra, Pranab Roy, Bharat Reddy, Rajesh Chauhan and Atul Wassan.

Eleven cricketers of the Punjab [Images] Cricket Association, including ODI discard Dinesh Mongia, returned to its fold, while 13 and eight players returned to the Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad Cricket Associations respectively.

Kapil Dev is legend. The rest all ran away.

Get Binny into T20 squad. Hes Gun.

Dheeraj Jadhav. Legend. Sign him upto the Indian side. Jadhav > Badrinath and Gambhir if ICC 06 is anything to go by :p

He is still young and at one time was Indias best opening bat in domestic cricket. He could have been our test match openor if he had stayed on.

And even Ambati Rayudu..
He is simply a Right handed Gilchrist..

He has just faded away. Was like what Virat Kohli is now.

Mate, he even has that form right now..

Last season, he rocked. he gave some extraordinary stars to Hyd Heroes which made the impossible matches possible..

and at the same time, we can't compare Virat Kohli to him as hey both are different..

R.Jesuraj(Tamilnadu) took 16 wickets in his Ranji debut IIRC.Was at his peak when he joined the ICL.
Badani even has a international century to his credit.Dinesh Mongia was there in the final 15 for the T20 WC 2007 when he joined ICL.
They were bright prospects then, but then wasted their chances of playing for their country tbh.

Yaa it is a shocking news i read it the indian players will now come in team to look is binny dasgupta reddy sathish and many more but no so good news for icl:noway

Will benefit our crap KKR side. Now we can dump some good for nothing Bengal players from the team, and pick real stars. (Deep, Avishek, Rohan)

I just went through Cricinfo's coverage of the entire drama.
Its good that most of them took the 'amnesty offer' which was made by the BCCI.Atleast, they wont be branded as rebels any longer.

Another thing I read- the outcome of the BCCI -ICL meetings.

The BCCI even led David Morgan, the ICC president, to believe that the issue could be sorted out amicably but ended up having two "compromise meetings" with the ICL that yielded nothing. The BCCI's offer? Shut down the ICL and take up an IPL franchise instead, or similar variations, including a suggestion that the ICL operate as a veterans' league. The ICL, not surprisingly, rejected these offers.

Why reject these suggestions ? They were good enough, especially the franchisee one.

Secondly, mentioned in the article was also this -

An ICL official privately suggested that these moves are part of a compromise that could see Zee TV, ICL's parent company, get a share of the official broadcasting pie when the BCCI's TV rights come up for renewal next year

My main question here is- who is ZEE-ICL to demand a share and why on earth should they get one ?

That could of been a good idea, imagine players being able to retire at 36-37 and going off to play against other retired internationals. I sure people would want to see it, and I'm sure it would keep current players interested in Test cricket as they would know they can make plenty of money when the "retire"

when will other country players would be released from ICL?

Waiting for Shane Bond:crying

Well Tuffey and Vincent have already been released, thats what it said in the Sunday paper anyway. I'm not too sure about Bond though, but it won't be long.
