that is the pic i used. but my software stuffs up and uses wrong colours (eg. a red icon copied and paste to the kit turns green or somfin

Check if you are using Indexed colour mode. Change to RGB colour.

And if you're still using Paint get something else maybe Paint Shop or GIMP.
