2003 ASCON Asia Cup

Teams

In August, the Asian Confederation of Nations confirmed the participation of eleven Full Member ASCON nations for the fourth edition of the ASCON Asia Cup. Defending champions Qatar won the rights to host the 2003 ASCON Asia Cup back in December of last year.
At the time of the the teams confirmation announcement, China were the best-ranked Asian team according to the World ODI Rankings, being ranked 9th in the world.

In terms of team changes India has rejoined ASCON following a year of absence and will be participating in this year's edition of the ASCON Asia Cup, with all members who participated in the 2002 edition also returning.

Before the tournament could begin, the Japanese Cricket Board withdrew from the tournament, reducing the number of participants from 11 to 10.

Format Changes and Draw

Due to their being a prime number of teams participating in this year's edition of the ASCON Asia Cup, the Confederation has elected to forgo the usual group stage into knockouts format and instead has settled on a Swiss format for the initial stage of the tournament. Teams will be guaranteed three games however most teams will play the full four games in order to determine who makes the knockouts, of which only four teams will qualify for. Because of this there won't be a draw conducted for this year's edition of the tournament and instead there will be a rankings cutoff after the conclusion of the 2003 Arab Cup which will determine seeding for the first round of the Swiss stage.
