It's hardly an investment though....isn't it an award? You usually honor the past... I mean talk about all those famous poets/authors who become famous 10 years after they die.

in my view recognition of this kind does fire the appetite of a player for more success...its good to honour the greats of the past but we have to make sure that enough carrots are dangling in front of the greats of the future...thats the way CA must have looked at it...

btw Gilly has scored at least a couple of blistering and matchwinning centuries...but thats his wont now...

Have you noticed it is always batsmen who win these awards....not bowlers......

Glenn McGrath won it not so long ago
Five of the six Border medallists have been batsmen.Bichel was the only bowler. Mcgrath was, If I recall correctly, the only bowler to win the Border Medal.Click Here

clarke got the medal mainly due to his awesome one day form. i think the huge importance of the indian tour to the australians was one of the reasons why martyn got so close. also langer from memory didnt do a whole lot. martyn almost equaled bradmans record going for like 4 tons in 4 matches or something. he got to like 97 trying in india and from memory about 60 in sydney against pakistan. langer had a good year but martyn put up some really big numbers. as for symonds. to get an award and have scored like 4 ducks from 5 knocks is a pretty mean effort. it was his work in sri lanka that did it, along with england
