Andrew Symonds steps away from Sheffield Shield for younger players

Andrew Symonds has told Queensland he won't play for them in the Sheffield Shield this season as he doesn't want to take a younger player's spot.

In a positive shot in the arm for the development of the Queensland Bulls, Symonds says he will only play in four-day cricket if he is sent a mayday by Bulls coach Trevor Barsby.

That would only happen if the Bulls suffered a major injury crisis and the most likely scenario is Symonds will play only Twenty20 cricket for Queensland.

The title link is a little mis-leading, the title on the article is probably more accurate.

A good move I feel from Symonds. He's never going to play for Australia again, unless he get's some freak call up for the Twenty20 squad but Australia has plenty of quality young batsmen to call up again so there isn't much point in him playing First Class cricket.

Definitely can't see him back in the Test side so definitely for the best. The youngsters will have to stand up though.

What if does come back into the Bulls Sheffield side and hits centuries everytime he's out on the pitch, would you think CA might contemplate his position in the Australian squad.

He's training with the Brisbane Broncos at the moment. He's going everywhere with them, training, during flights, on the sideline, etc.

Not a surprising call there from Symonds, his chances for playing for Australia again are very low and it's a good decision by him to give the younger players a chance.

He is a very talented man. And with this gesture, he has shown he is magnanimous as well. He's not as bad as the press makes him out to be. He's a good man :)

QLD cricket will be worse without him

They already have an inexperienced side and with Symonds they'd at least have one old boy there to give hints and tips.

Stupid imo.

Queensland do have Carseldine, Philipson and Hopes in the batting to bring experience so its not like Symonds is leaving Queensland with no experienced player.

Stepping away for younger players is all well and good, as long as the team actually has some talent and can be competitve. The current QLD batting and bowling line-up is dog ordinary.
