NEW MANAGER

Plymouth Argyle announced their new manager to the press today, and it was revealed to be Mr Matt West. After the suprise exit of Tony Pulis to Stoke, Ian Holloway was one the favourites to become manager, as well as Bristol boss Gary Johnson.

Mr West will take over at the start of the pre-season games and will look to guide the Pilgrims to safety and beyond.

When asked why he accepted the job he said, "well i have always been looking to get into management side of the game. I am a Devon lad, a Plymouth fan. I believe we have the greatest fans in the world, we have a great team - a blend of youth and experience, with several player under 21, and what he described as the "Warhorses" of the team."

"People i know, Rhys Williams, manager of Cardiff City, and James Edmonds, Swansea Manager, are great guys, they are my friends, have given me a little bit of banter. I am going to show them how to be great managers, i am sure they will accept some friendly abuse from each other."

Here is the Argyle team which Matt West will inherit:

PILGRIMS SQUAD
Lets have a look at the Argyle squad for the season 2006-2007 in more detailed analysis:

Goalkeepers
Well Argyle's number 1 last year, Roman Larrieu, will be on the sidleines for the preseason games, and perhaps more. He has got a testicular infection, which will leave the door open for young keeper, Luke McCormick. The 23 year old from Coventry will be looking to impress and keep Roman out of the side. Due to his absence, argyle wasted no time in signing a back-up goalie. Josh Clapham, who was the Plymouth University keeper, has signed a contract and he hopes to get some action during the pre-season.

Defenders
Argyle have a very young, inexperienced defence. Matty Doumbe, is a rock in defence and will probably be there at the start of the season. He's strong and agile and will be key if they are going to do well. Hasney Aljofree, is also a strong centre back, the Mancunian is great in the tackle, and much like MD a vital aspect. Tony Capaldi is a Northern Ireland international, but there has been much specualtion about his future. Last season a string of mistakes, saw him fall out of favour, and with the emergence of Gary Sawyer, who is better than any of the back line, we may not see Tony for very long. Marcel Seip was signed on a free transfer from Heerenveen, and little is known about him. He is an aggresive tackler and always looks to do well. Last season he spent most of it on the bench or at right back. Paul Connolly is a flying wing-back and has many fans at home park. He has great ability in the tackle and can fly down the wings.
The other two defenders are 18 year olds scotsman Scott Laird and Brixham youngster Ryan Dickson.

Midfield
This is the strongest area for the Pilgrims. They have 2 rocks in the middle of the park, with tough tackling Lillian Nalis, once of Sheffield United, and lifelong pilgrim Paul Wotton. Wottsy is a great leader, powerfully built, and a free kick maestro. Akos Buzsaky will return from injury, and when he is on form, can be the best player in the league. He can score goals and play out on the wing. He has amazing footwork and has great vision. The Pilgrim's task with him is whether they can keep him, but Botlon are tracking him, and may tempt him away. Another Argyle diamond and last years player of the year is David Norris. He is like a pitbull, who is always running around, getting the ball. He runs at defenders and scores his fair share of goals. Bojan Djordic once of Man U, has played very few games. He is a bit of a sluchy trainer, but he is seeking to improve. He is a great winger who runs at players, he has to prove to West that he is worth his wages. Lee Hodges was a former SPurs trainee and is a versatile player. He can play Left Mid, LEft Back, Centre Mid. He is a back-up player who is determined to do well.
The rest of the midfield is made of young starlets Luke Summerfield, alot like Paul Wotton. And 16 year Dan Gosling, who is tipped as a great prospect and could break into the first team.

Strikers
Barry Hayles move from Milwall, could be the bargain of the season. ?100,000 is all the pilgrims paid for the veteran. He could bring, the fire-power that they missed last year and help teach the youngsters how to play better. He is a powerful player and dogged. His strike partner could be either former Everton striker Nick Chadwick, who is a great off the man player, and is good at making runs. But what lets him down is the lack of goals. The other possibility is Former Man U striker Sylvain Ebanks-Blake, he is an unknown quantity who will be eager to prove his ?200,000 price tag.
The other strikers are Reuben Reid, and Ireland Youth international Antony Mason.
