Story Australia Tour South Africa

Nice start to the tests, Hopefully McGrath and Lee can claim a few early wickets.

As the players went back onto the feild for the 2nd session on Day 2 it was obvious that they couldnt lose many early wickets or there hopes of winning the match would go down the gurgler.

Smith kickstarted the fightback dooing the bulk of the scoring as DeVilliers was troubled with the pace of Lee and accuracy of McGrath. The partnership reached 50 in the 15th over and soon had Ponting looking for a way to break the partnership before it really hurt the Australians.

Ponting went with Nathan Bracken to break the partnership after the opening spells. However the Proteas took to him and he was hit out of the attack. Ponting then turned to Symonds but he to acheived nothing in a modest 5 over spell.

In a tough time who better to give the ball then Shane Warne.

It looked almost scripted as Warney picked up the wicket with the 5th ball of his first over the flipper got through the defenses of AB DeVilliers. A good opening stand that got the home team to 1/77.

As if the 1st wicket wasnt enough warne then picked up the captain Smith in his next over with a ball that that jumped off a length took the outside edge and balooned to Hayden. Warnes figures now looked very impressive.

Brett Lee joined in picking up his first wicket trapping Kallis infront for 18 as the Australians where now gaining the advantage.

Gibbs and Prince brought it through to Tea on the second day with the South Africans now needing a partnership badly to stay alive. Warne had done the damage and it looks to only get better for him as this pitch it turning quite abit.

South Africa 3/124

DeVilliers 28
Smith 44
Kallis 18
Gibbs 18*
Prince 4*

McGrath 0/12
Lee 0/40

Warne 2/27

Wow, this is a great story mate.
You bat like a true test player and the scores are very realistic ;).

The South Africans obviously needed to finish off the day well. They where in the position to build a partnership and get back in the game or lose wickets and lose touch with the Australians.

Having struggled against the likes of Warne, Lee and McGrath the Proteas went into there shell and the session was dominated bythe forward defence as the Australians went past the edge of the bat numerious times.

Ashwell Prince was the man to go in the first hour of the session playing on the up to another well pitched ball from Glenn McGrath and spooning a catch to the waiting Brad Hodge.

A few good shots and some solid defence followed as the man that McGrath has targeted for this series Jaques Rudolph joined Gibbs who showed determination throughout the session as Australia gave him nothing to hit. The partnership is at 42 for the South Africans.

At stumps on day 2 the match is still well poised while South Africa still have Boucher and Pollock in the shed alone with some handy lower order batting from Botha to come there is still a big chance for them to get back in the game given the fact that the pitch is still a road. It will take more relentless bowling from Australia to keep the home team at bay.

South Africa 4/170
Trail by 188 runs

Prince 5
Gibbs 37*
Rudolph 18*

McGrath 1/15
Lee 1/43
Bracken 0/28
Symonds 0/29
Warne 2/53

Gaining the advantage at the start of Day 3 is important for both teams. The team that finishes ontop at stumps will be able to dictate terms for the rest of the match.

With South Africa in a difficult situation over night with the last of there specialist batsmen at the crease and still needing over 150 runs to be back in the mix.

Despite porm figures Nathan Bracken is given the ball at the start of play with Glenn Mcgrath whos bowling form is nothing short of spectatular as he is going at about a run an over.

Gibbs started where he left off yesterday his innings has been the rock for South Africa where other batsman have tried to build around him.

As the partnership went past 50 Gibbs reached his personal milestone of a hard fought half century against the world champions but his job isnt done yet.

After hanging around for 127 balls Rudolph got impatience with a ruthless Glenn McGrath attempting to smash his over cover all he acheived was an edge to Mike Hussey in the gully. Rudolph must have been kicking himself as McGrath had his man and figures of 2/15 off as many overs.

Gibbs was joined by Boucher who seemed unsure about the Australian bowling at first but gradually warmed to the task. Running out of men to weild the willow to seemed to all fall in the hands of Herschelle Gibbs who needed a big score and more importantly he needed support from the other end.

Mark Boucher was up to the task taking it through to Lunch on the 3rd Day with Gibbs. South Africa getting closer now to the lead of the Australians.

South Africa 5/243

Rudolph 31
Gibbs 76*
Boucher 16*

McGrath 2/24
Lee 1/47
Bracken 0/50
Symonds 0/47
Warne 2/71

The first can still go either way so it would be important to start the 2nd session of Day 3 off well. Ricky Ponting knew an early wicket was the key to bowling out the South Africans as quickly as possible so his boys could have a comfortable lead going into the second innings.

Ponting gave the ball to his go to men Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath and it didnt take long for them to make things happen. Just 10 runs added after Lunch and Warney had Gibbs clean bowled through the gate. This was a massive wicket for the Australians Gibbs had showed alot of heart in batting through 2 full sessions and was finally removed for 82 as pollock came to the crease.

Pollock wasted no time at all playing his shots from the start. He got away with edges through slips and mishits falling between feilders. Proving he was no mug with the bat he steped it up a gear clubing the untouchable McGrath high over the covers for 6 add to that a series of 4s and the South Africans are now looking good to pass the Australian first innings total as Boucher joined in with big hits of his own as the partnership went to 50.

The Australians looked on helplessly as Boucher and Pollock continued to amaze with there strokeplay. No bowling change Ponting could make would upset the rythm of the Proteas as the ball was thrown to anyone willing to take it while the Australians searched for answers.

There was no justice for the Australians as they went to tea with worried looks on there faces with the South Africans just 38 runs short of there total.

Can the Australians go into the 2ns innings with the lead that once looked as safe as houses or will the South Africans through there lower order give they Australians sleepless nights ahead of the 4th Day. A big session awaits as the momentum is with the South Africans.

South Africa 6/320

Gibbs 82
Boucher 43*
Pollock 41*

McGrath 2/41
Lee 1/76
Bracken 0/54
Symonds 0/47
