Australian team 5 years from now

1. Hughes
2. Warner
3. Clarke*
4. Ferguson
5. Pomersbach
6. Watson
7. White
8. Paine+
9. Johnson
10. Siddle
11. Hilfenhaus

Why do you say the selection of Warner is stupid? Is it because you're seeing it in the light that in 5 years he will be exactly the same player he is now? Is it because you think that there's absolutely zero chance of him improving as a player?

I don't see the potential there. He has been so hyped up by modern cricket fans. "Did you see Warners Twenty20 debut!!!!!!! He should be opening in every game in every form!!!!!!"

He actually isn't an opener. He has had success there in the recent past, but he is actually a middle order batsmen...well, in proper cricket at least.

In what form? That would rely on Johnson, Siddle and Hilfenhaus bowling way to many overs, Watson bowling more overs than he can handle, and White bowling a fair few as well. And that's just disastrous.

Reason I put in Ronchi is I don't feel any of the current keepers are suited to ODIs bar him. Haddin will be gone by then if hes not already gone after the Ashes the way his keeping is going.

Warner was moved cause he wasn't going as well in the middle order. Where he bats in FC is irrelevant to where he bats in OD you just have to look at where Tendulkar bats in Test cricket compared to ODI to see they don't always match up.

Agree with you on Warner - he is no lock for my ODI team and I don't want a guy like him in my Test side. He's got the Ronchi/Symonds syndrome a bit, plays a flashy innings and everyone crows about the talent. There is some talent there for sure, but it needs harnessing. Symonds took 5-6 years to cement his ODI spot and only Ponting's stubborn faith kept him in. I think we have enough good players that we should never have to do that... but anyway, getting distracted.

Also agree on the Watson & White roles in the team. I think in 5 years Watson and White will be playing purely as batsmen - and good batsmen too. In my crystal ball I see that:
*Watson will have succumbed to his numerous injuries in a few years and won't be bowling, in fact the time he's spent on his batting while recovering from bowling injuries will help him mature into a classy middle order batsman. He already averages in the high 40s in first class cricket.
*White will have realised that the charade he goes through calling himself a spinner is fooling nobody, and hopefully as a batsmen he's worked out how to channel and work the bowling in ODIs a bit more by then rather than just having a slog/no slog option. I still don't think he'll ever be a better batsmen than Pomersbach though - hard to see him getting a spot in my team.

i would of though the three strike bowlers to bowl mainly, with watson and white to make up a joint fourth bowler, and then the part time bowling of clarke and ferguson to fill in the gaps

Crostwhaite? I'd much rather have a keeper of sound gloves in the team than continue to persist with batsmen who just happen to keep as well.

My team at this stage would be:
1. Hughes
2. Quiney
3. Clarke (c)
4. Marsh
5. Pomersbach
6. Watson
7. Paine (wk)
8. Johnson
9. Siddle
10. McKay
11. Hilfenhaus

Others: White, Holland, Geeves, Ferguson, others I haven't though of in this quick post.

Callum Ferguson will be a failure. Don't pick him.

Keep an eye out for a guy called Luke Doran in the next several years. Left-arm spinner, with an amazing arm-ball. His playing Australia u19s in India atm, I think, not too sure. He'll be Australia's permanant spinner one-day.

Jeeze, look at those names, the Australian team is going to be total crap in 5 years time.
I wonder if Pakistan will still be playing International cricket in 5 years.

Not as bad as the problem England have with a clown like Owais Shah batting in the prime position of number 3 and when you've got a chick in the team with long blonde hair as the next great English bowler then you know that you've got some serious problems.

Smoooth. Realising I'm right you go to pathetic little digs. Nice work Ben. Another argument you've won..........=/

Shah > Watson as well. Better Test record, and he's batting at 3. Watson's never going to be a Test batsman, certainly not a Test match Number 4. Judging by this thread I'd say England will have a batting stronger side in 4 years. It appears that there is very little in terms of batting coming through the Aussie system, if Watson's at 4 and Johnson's at 6 anyway. We've got guys like Bopara, Patel, Trott, Denly, Malan, Morgan, Horton and Godleman all in County Cricket, plus Bell, Pietersen and Cook should be nearing their primes. Just the bowling we need to sort out, but Broad, with his dashing good looks, and flowing blonde locks will be a star.
